The Exorcist: Martyrs trailer reveals Scarlett Johansson’s new horror thriller – Universal Pictures Australia has unveiled the official trailer for Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs, with Scarlett Johansson leading a supernatural crime thriller set for Australian cinemas on 11 March 2027.

Rather than beginning with an exorcism, the film centres on a detective pulled back into a serial-killer investigation she thought was over. That crime-story hook gives Australian audiences a clearer idea of Flanagan’s approach to this new chapter of The Exorcist ahead of its March cinema release. Universal’s US film page lists 12 March, a day after the Australian date announced locally.

What is The Exorcist: Martyrs about?

Johansson plays New York City detective Julie Miller. Thirteen years ago, she ended the killings of Father Sunday, a satanic serial murderer. The case made her a hero, and she immersed herself in police work afterwards. Now another killer has written her name in an altar boy’s blood on the wall of a church crypt, forcing her to confront the past.

Julie is joined by former prison chaplain Father William, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, and rookie detective Gina Restrepo, played by Sasha Calle. William heard Father Sunday’s final confession. Together, the investigators find a thread connecting a lineage of serial killers, from H.H. Holmes to the Zodiac, to a threat that goes beyond the mortal. The danger reaches into Julie’s family as well as her case.

Scarlett Johansson leads Mike Flanagan’s cast

Diane Lane plays Julie’s mother, Mary, who has moved in to help raise her grandson Max, played by Jacobi Jupe. Scoot McNairy appears as paroled convict Clay Silver. Gil Bellows plays Peter Nicks, a former acolyte of Father Sunday, while Laurence Fishburne is Father Nichol. John Leguizamo takes the role of Father Sunday.

Flanagan wrote and directed the film, drawing on characters created by William Peter Blatty. Universal points to his work on The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher and Midnight Mass, alongside films including Doctor Sleep, Hush, Gerald’s Game and The Life of Chuck. His forthcoming Carrie series is also among the credits highlighted with this release.

David Robinson, Jason Blum and Flanagan are producers. Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek are executive producers. Universal describes the film as a supernatural crime thriller, a description reflected in the trailer’s investigation-led premise and its warning: “Darkness must be hunted.”

The Exorcist: Martyrs opens exclusively in Australian cinemas on Thursday, 11 March 2027.
