Tonight | Ports to Paradise on Channel 7: Mark Beretta cruises the Danube and Rhine – Mark Beretta trades the pace of live sport for two European river journeys in the one-hour Cruising Special, airing Saturday 10 October 2026 at 7.00pm on Channel 7.
The change of pace is the draw. Beretta is familiar to Australian viewers as a sports broadcaster, but here his warmth and curiosity guide a travel programme built around landscapes, cities, food and the time to explore them.
Two rivers, six countries
The first Avalon Waterways voyage begins on the Danube in Germany. Beretta travels through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, taking in historic cities and local experiences along the way. The second journey follows the Rhine through Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands before ending in Amsterdam.
Across the two cruises, the special pairs panoramic scenery with culture and cuisine. Rather than staying in one destination, it uses the rivers as a route through different parts of Europe, showing how the character of each stop changes as the journey moves from country to country.
Beretta’s humour and conversations provide a personal thread through the programme. The result is a travel hour centred on both the destinations and the appeal of seeing them at a slower pace. For viewers planning a Saturday night in, the mix of two distinct European routes gives the special more variety than a single-location travelogue.
