Tonight | Better Homes and Gardens on Channel 7: Michelle Payne and midweek meal ideas – Melbourne Cup winner Michelle Payne joins Dr Harry to look at what happens to racehorses after their racing careers, while Johanna returns to Nicole Maguire for more help with midweek dinners. The Friday episode also packs in cooking, gardening and home projects.

For viewers after a practical weekend idea, the line-up ranges from a three-material garden path to a custom dog bed and handmade lighting. The food stories offer a different kind of shortcut: Nicole’s approach to dinner planning and Colin’s green couscous recipe.

Michelle Payne and life after racing

Dr Harry meets Payne at Boneo Park’s Off The Track Championships. The first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup is an ambassador for Racing Victoria’s Off the Track programme, which works to retrain and rehome retired thoroughbreds. They explore how former racehorses can find a new role beyond the finish line.

Johanna revisits Nicole Maguire, whose Simple Home Edit grew out of her own frustration with the time, cost and effort of getting dinner on the table. An earlier visit drew a strong response, so Johanna returns for more of Nicole’s midweek-meal ideas.

Food, plants and weekend projects

Colin makes spring green couscous with a sauce of kale, apple, garlic, sorrel and mint. Roasted almonds and crumbled feta finish the dish, adding texture to a recipe built around greens.

Graham reconnects with indoor-plant enthusiast Jan, known online as Sydney Plant Guy. Jan demonstrates his chop-and-extend propagation method, designed to help create new growth while the original plant keeps growing.

Charlie sets out to build what he calls the world’s easiest garden pathway. His version uses three materials and is planned as a weekend job. Adam, meanwhile, makes an elevated custom bed for a family dog, aiming for a comfortable place to sleep that also fits the home.

Juliet turns wooden brackets, cup hooks and polymer clay into sculptural wall sconces. Melissa heads to Clonakilty Farm near Brisbane for an off-grid camping trip featuring mountain views, hiking, fishing and farm-to-plate food.
