Bridgerton spin-off to follow young Violet and Edmund on Netflix – Netflix and Shondaland are developing a limited series about the younger Lady Violet Bridgerton and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton.

The project is currently untitled. It will revisit the relationship that shaped the matriarch of the Bridgerton family before the events of the main series. Netflix has not announced casting for the younger characters, a filming timetable or a release date.

For Australian viewers, the announcement expands a franchise already available on Netflix Australia, rather than replacing the flagship drama. It also gives the Bridgerton family history its own story, following the earlier prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

Who is making the Bridgerton spin-off?

Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will write, serve as showrunners and executive produce the limited series. Tom Verica is attached as director and executive producer, while Betsy Beers will also executive produce. Netflix and Shondaland have described the project as a look at Violet’s early life and her romance with Edmund.

In the established Bridgerton story, Violet is the widowed mother of the eight siblings at its centre. Ruth Gemmell plays the older Violet in the parent series. The new project will explore a period viewers have largely known through the family’s recollections, but Netflix has not said whether Gemmell will appear.

Where does the main series stand?

Production is underway in London on season five of Bridgerton. That season turns to Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza. Netflix says season four reached number one on its global English-language television list and entered the Top 10 in 92 countries.

The Violet project follows Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story as the franchise’s second character-led spin-off. Its young-romance premise may invite comparisons with that prequel, but no episode count, cast or premiere window has been disclosed. Those details remain to be announced.
