The Altruists trailer puts FTX’s rise and fall on Netflix – Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle play Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried in Netflix’s new eight-part limited drama, arriving on 19 November.
The official trailer frames the pair’s relationship alongside their attempt to remake finance through the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The series follows the ambitious young founders as the enterprise grows and then collapses amid allegations that the founders diverted billions of dollars.
For Australian audiences, this is a scripted interpretation of a real financial scandal, not a documentary or a substitute for the legal record. Netflix lists the premiere for 19 November, with all eight episodes due to stream together.
What is The Altruists about?
Netflix describes Bankman-Fried and Ellison as two highly intelligent idealists who wanted to transform the global financial system. Their partnership became inseparable from the rise and fall of FTX. The drama treats their personal relationship and business decisions as parallel threads, with the trailer moving between intimacy, wealth and the mounting consequences of the company’s failure.
Garner portrays Ellison, while Boyle portrays Bankman-Fried. The cast also includes Karan Soni. Reporting from New York Magazine inspired the series. Netflix has made it a limited drama rather than an ongoing show.
The creative team
Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt serve as co-showrunners, writers and executive producers. James Ponsoldt directed the opening episode and also executive produced the series. Higher Ground Productions is among the companies behind the project.
The trailer arrives after Netflix released first-look images of the actors in character. Its focus on the couple makes clear that The Altruists is looking at how an idealistic narrative around FTX coexisted with the decisions that brought the company down. Viewers should understand the programme’s version of events as a dramatisation.
