Tonight | A Taste For Murder on Channel 7: a cliff death and a baking clue – DCI Joe Mottram is drawn into another investigation in Italy when a British tourist is found dead below a cliff. Episode two of A Taste For Murder asks whether she fell or was pushed, with an unexpected clue emerging from Elena’s kitchen.
The case puts the show’s two central strands together. Joe came to Italy with his daughter Angelica after the death of his wife Sofia, hoping for time with family rather than another police investigation. Instead, the seaside restaurant run by his in-laws Gennaro and Elena Da Vinale keeps bringing his family life into contact with his detective work.
Tonight’s question is not simply who was near the cliff. Elena’s baking lesson causes Joe to look at the evidence again, and the episode synopsis says he finds a decisive clue. The outcome remains under wraps, but the route to that discovery shows why food is more than a backdrop to this mystery series.
A tourist’s death below the cliff
The victim is a British tourist. Investigators first have to establish whether her fall was an accident or whether someone pushed her. That distinction changes how Joe approaches the evidence and what he may need to prove.
Joe is still learning how to work alongside local Inspector Lara Sarrancino. The series describes their relationship as a grudging partnership, formed after his intended sabbatical was disrupted by a separate murder and the arrest of Gennaro’s nephew Luca. This new case gives them another test of that uneasy arrangement.
Elena’s role is equally important. Her baking lesson prompts Joe’s fresh look at the evidence, linking a domestic moment to the investigation. The programme has established that his lessons with the family can help him think through a case while also reconnecting him with Sofia’s relatives.
The episode is titled Torta Della Nonna (Granny’s Birthday Cake). Joe has to follow the clue without losing sight of why he travelled with Angelica in the first place: to repair family bonds after Sofia’s death. The mystery and that personal journey now sit side by side.
