Tonight | A Taste For Murder on Channel 7: Joe’s Italian holiday becomes a murder case – DCI Joe Mottram hopes a trip to Italy with his daughter Angelica will give them room to grieve and reconnect. Instead, his in-laws ask him to help clear a relative accused of murder. A Taste For Murder begins tonight at 8.30pm on Channel 7, after arriving on 7plus at 6.00pm.
The first episode, Uova in Purgatorio (Eggs in Purgatory), sets up a holiday that quickly turns into an investigation. Joe has taken a sabbatical after the sudden death of his wife Sofia, and police work is the last thing he wants to bring to her family’s Italian home.
For Channel 7 viewers, the opening case is also the starting point for a family story. Joe’s efforts to help the people close to Sofia draw him back into detective work while he is still trying to rebuild his relationship with Angelica.
A murder interrupts Joe and Angelica’s break
Chef Gennaro and Elena Da Vinale welcome Joe and Angelica to their seaside restaurant. But when a local man’s body is found on a beach, Gennaro’s nephew and sous-chef Luca is arrested for murder. The family turns to Joe to help clear his name.
That request puts Joe at odds with local Inspector Lara Sarrancino. The series follows the pair as their initial clash develops into a grudging partnership while unusual crimes emerge on the island.
The 7plus programme page places Joe’s retreat in Capri. Its Italian setting is more than a backdrop: Gennaro and Elena’s restaurant brings the family together, even as the case threatens the break Joe and Angelica had hoped for.
Cooking and detection meet in Italy
Joe begins learning Italian dishes in the kitchen with Gennaro and Elena. The series connects those lessons to the cases he investigates, giving him a different way to think through clues while also spending time with Sofia’s family.
The episode-one synopsis keeps the outcome of Luca’s case under wraps. What it does establish is Joe’s dilemma: he came to Italy to step away from his profession, but the people hosting him now need precisely the skills he hoped to leave behind.
The show’s longer story also follows Joe’s attempt to become a better father. As he works alongside Lara and gets to know his in-laws, the investigation and his family life become harder to keep separate.
