My Kitchen Rules recap on Channel 7: Jane’s flavour jab stirs trouble – Mary and Golden’s Filipino feast put them second on the leaderboard, but Jane’s verdict on the other teams nearly eclipsed their achievement. The food stylist told her My Kitchen Rules rivals that Tiffany and Giancarlo were the first to serve real flavour, provoking an immediate backlash around the table.

For viewers following the Instant Restaurant standings, the result changes the picture without dislodging the leaders. Mary and Golden’s 77 points move the nurses and lifelong friends into second place behind Tiffany and Giancarlo. Meanwhile, Jane and Shane are next to cook, giving their rivals a chance to judge the standards Jane has applied to everyone else.

Mary and Golden called their restaurant Aming Kusina and built their menu around Filipino food and family pride. They served Okoy Fritters with Pipino Salad, Cebu Lechon Belly with Pandan Rice and Atchara, then a Mango Float Ice Cream Sandwich. Their evening was both a competition cook and a chance to represent their heritage on national television.

Jane’s comments divide the My Kitchen Rules table

The friction began before the scores were known. Jane and Shane described themselves as honest critics, but Krysten and Lucy questioned whether their comments softened when hosts returned to the table. Alisha was also unimpressed when Jane appeared to contradict Shane over an earlier plating remark.

Then Manu Feildel asked Jane which team she considered the strongest competition. She chose Tiffany and Giancarlo, saying they were the first kitchen to bring the group real flavour. Simon called the assessment outrageous, while Krysten challenged the implication that the first three teams had served flavourless food. Jane held her ground: “Effort doesn’t equal flavour.”

That distinction between hard work and what reaches the plate is a legitimate judging question. However, Jane’s sweeping comparison made it personal for teams who had already cooked. With her own Instant Restaurant still ahead, her words also raised expectations for what she and Shane will deliver.

Mary and Golden’s Filipino menu earns 77 points

Amid the argument, Mary and Golden produced the night’s strongest dish first. Their Okoy Fritters impressed both judges. Manu praised the crisp vegetables and gave nine out of 10; Colin Fassnidge admired the succulent prawns and awarded a perfect 10. The entrée contributed 19 points to the judges’ total.

The Cebu Lechon Belly had successful crackling, pickles and a liver sauce that stood out. Nevertheless, the pork itself was overcooked and dry. Manu scored the main seven and Colin six. Colin even jokingly moved Mary from self-styled “queen of pork” to “princess”, underlining how a promising plate lost marks on its centrepiece.

Dessert split opinion in a different way. The judges liked the smooth mango ice cream in the Mango Float Ice Cream Sandwich, but found the milk bun too dense and yeasty. Both awarded five out of 10. The judges’ combined scores were 42 out of 60: 19 for the entrée, 13 for the main and 10 for dessert.

The five guest teams each gave Mary and Golden seven out of 10, adding 35 out of 50. Their overall 77 points lifted them to second place. It was an emotional result for Golden, who said she wanted her family to be proud of her and spoke about representing the Filipino community.

Jane and Shane face their own Instant Restaurant test

The next cook now has an unusually sharp edge. Jane and Shane have promised to lift the standard and aim for 90 points, according to Channel 7’s preview. Their competitors, stung by Jane’s criticism, have said they will examine every element of the meal. Whether the pair can meet the benchmark Jane set remains the question for the next episode.

My Kitchen Rules continues at 7.30pm on Monday and Tuesday on Channel 7 and 7plus. The next episode is scheduled for Monday 12 October.
