Framed first look reveals wrongfully accused Australian documentary – Australian filmmaker Anupam Sharma has unveiled the first look at Framed, a new feature documentary about Kamer Nizamdeen, ahead of its world sales launch at TIFF: The Market.
The film puts an Australian legal and media story back in focus. It examines wrongful accusation, Islamophobia and the long damage that can follow after a public case collapses.
Framed follows Nizamdeen, who was 25 when he was arrested in Sydney on terrorism charges. He was held in solitary confinement for a month before all charges were dropped.
The documentary follows his fight to rebuild his name and his life. It also looks at how a forged document helped place an international student at the centre of a national security storm.
The Story
The film features interviews with Kamer Nizamdeen, Najwa Nizamdeen and principal lawyer Moustafa Kheir of Birchgrove Legal.
It was filmed across Sydney, Melbourne, Colombo and New York. The release describes the case as a story about a forgery that fooled a nation, and the personal cost that followed.
Creative Team
Framed is directed by Anupam Sharma, whose screen work includes UNindian, The Run and Brand Bollywood.
The film is edited and co-written by Karin Steininger, known for Anne Frank Remembered. Executive producers include Janine Barnes and Cathy Rodda, with AFTRS graduate Farabee Kabir also among the senior creative team.
Festival And Release Plans
Forum Films is handling theatrical sales in Australia and New Zealand. Other territories are available as the documentary opens to world buyers.
The team is also planning an impact and event-screening campaign around the film.
Framed was developed with support from Screen Australia, Screen NSW and SBS. Post-production, digital and visual effects support came from Screen NSW. The project was also selected for the FACTory at AIDC.
