Peter Rice takes over Netflix content as Bela Bajaria departs — Netflix has appointed Peter Rice as its chief content officer from 26 October, replacing Bela Bajaria as the executive responsible for its global programming operation.

For Australian subscribers, this is a leadership change, not an announced change to the Netflix catalogue. The company has not detailed local commissioning, staffing or release-plan changes alongside the appointment.

Rice will oversee scripted and unscripted series, film, live events and other content across Netflix’s regions. Bajaria is leaving after almost a decade at the company, most recently leading its global content team.

What Rice will oversee

The breadth of the job matters because Netflix now spans more than scripted dramas and films. Its content operation also covers reality and factual shows, live events and sport. Those decisions can shape what is commissioned for individual markets, although this announcement names no new Australian projects.

Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos credited Bajaria with broadening unscripted programming, launching live events and sports, and building a worldwide slate of films and series. Rice’s task is to lead that existing organisation from late October.

Rice acknowledged the team he is inheriting:

I’m grateful to Bela for building such a remarkable global team

A long career in television and film

Rice was most recently chairman of Walt Disney Television and chairman of general entertainment at Disney. His previous responsibilities covered broadcast and cable networks, studios, streaming and news. Earlier roles included leading Fox Networks Group and Fox Searchlight Pictures.

His film background includes work on Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet with Baz Luhrmann at Twentieth Century Fox. It is a connection to an Australian filmmaker, but Netflix has not linked the appointment to a new Luhrmann project.

What to watch next

The practical question is whether Netflix later announces changes to its Australian originals, local commissioning team or release strategy. For now, the confirmed development is the executive handover on 26 October; any effect on what viewers can watch here remains unannounced.
