Netflix snaps up 2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback ahead of TIFF premiere – Netflix has acquired the four-part Australian documentary series 2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback globally. The deal comes before its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The deal gives a major Australian First Nations documentary a global platform. In addition, the Blackfella Films production is the only documentary among the 10 series selected worldwide for TIFF’s Primetime program. The program spotlights episodic television.
Blackfella Films produced the series for SBS and NITV. It examines the events and repercussions of two fatal shots fired in 2.6 seconds. The shots ended the life of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker. They also prompted a national reckoning around justice, policing and race in Australia.

Darren Dale directs and produces the series. Andrew Boe writes, while Jacob Hickey is also an executive producer. Blackfella Films produces with PAW Media, All3Media International and Banijay Entertainment.
Dale said the story explores “the collision of race and power”. He said it is uniquely Australian but carries global resonance. Meanwhile, Netflix ANZ content director Amanda Duthie said the streamer was honoured to bring the story to audiences worldwide.

The series is a co-commission between SBS and NITV. It received major production investment from Screen Australia’s First Nations Department in association with SBS. It also received support from Screen NSW. Netflix will premiere 2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback in early 2027.
