My Brilliant Career debuts at number four globally on Netflix – My Brilliant Career has made a strong global start for Netflix, debuting at number four on the streamer’s Global Top 10 English TV Shows list.
The Australian series also landed in the Top 10 in 54 countries. That includes a number three debut in Australia, number four in New Zealand and number nine in the UK.
Since its release last Thursday, Netflix says the series has reached 3.1 million views.
For Australian television, the result is a notable international launch. The series brings Miles Franklin’s classic Australian novel to a global Netflix audience, while also giving a locally filmed drama strong visibility overseas.
A Global Debut For An Australian Story
My Brilliant Career is based on the novel by Miles Franklin.
The series stars Philippa Northeast as Sybylla Melvyn, a young woman in 1900 Australia who wants to become a writer. Her family is determined to marry her off, but Sybylla is chasing a life of independence.
Netflix describes Sybylla as a modern young woman for her time. She breaks convention as she searches for the story that will allow her to write her way forward.
The series was filmed in South Australia, with support from the South Australian Film Corporation. Locations included Adelaide Studios and other South Australian sites.
Creative Team On The Adaptation
Executive producer Chloe Rickard said adapting the novel came with both privilege and responsibility.
“Australian stories deserve to be told, and in this case, told again,” Rickard said.
She said the series gives audiences a chance to reconnect with the story. It also introduces the work to viewers who are discovering it for the first time.
Showrunner Liz Doran said the title itself carries uncertainty for Sybylla.
Doran said Sybylla does not know if her career will be brilliant. What she does know is that she has a creative fire inside her that must be answered.
Cast And Release Momentum
Alongside Northeast, the cast includes Christopher Chung as Harry Beecham, Anna Chancellor as Mrs Bossier, Genevieve O’Reilly as Aunt Helen and Kate Mulvany as Augusta Beecham.
Jake Dunn plays Frank Hawden, with Alexander England as Julius, Sherry-Lee Watson as Nell and Miah Madden as Betty.
The show’s global debut comes after Northeast and Chung reunited at the 2026 TV Week Logie Awards in Sydney.

My Brilliant Career: My Way centres on the show’s themes of independence, creativity and writing on your own terms.
