Making Marie Antoinette streams on MUBI from November – MUBI has confirmed that Making Marie Antoinette, the feature documentary directed by Eleanor Coppola and produced by Sofia Coppola, will stream exclusively on the platform from 6 November 2026.
The release gives Australian MUBI subscribers a fresh way into Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette. It also reframes the cult favourite through Eleanor Coppola’s footage from the Palace of Versailles production.
That perspective matters because the documentary is not simply a making-of extra. Instead, it looks at an ambitious studio film through the eyes of a filmmaker who was also watching her daughter direct at a pivotal point in her career.
The documentary draws on around 80 hours of material shot while Sofia Coppola was making the Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman-led feature. The footage follows the scale of the Versailles shoot, the creative pressure behind the production and the craft that shaped the final film.
Eleanor Coppola’s camera captures the work behind the film’s distinctive world, including the Palace of Versailles locations and the costumes created by Milena Canonero.
Sofia Coppola later completed the feature-length documentary to honour her mother’s wish that the footage become a finished film. As a result, Making Marie Antoinette is being presented as both a study of filmmaking craft and an intimate family portrait.
Diane Lane voices Eleanor Coppola in the documentary, reading from the filmmaker’s journals about the production and her relationship with Sofia. The footage was edited by Aaron Matthews with input from Davia Nelson and Liz Bird.
