The eight-part documentary series places JAŸ-Z in conversation with Rick Rubin for a career-spanning look at his lyrics, creative process and the experiences that shaped his work.
For Australian viewers, the release gives MUBI a high-profile music documentary built around one of hip-hop’s most influential artists, while also positioning the streamer as the local home for the series outside North America.
Rick Rubin directs the documentary series
JAŸ-Z IN 8 marks Rubin’s documentary directing debut. Across the series, Rubin curates a song-by-song path through JAŸ-Z’s back catalogue and uses that playlist as the basis for a deeper conversation about writing, influence and artistic change.
MUBI describes the series as a candid and intimate conversation between JAŸ-Z and Rubin. The series studies how JAŸ-Z’s lyrics reflect his childhood, the experiences that formed him and the world he moved through as his career grew.
The project is executive produced by Shawn Carter, Daniel Kaluuya and Rick Rubin. Leila Mattimore and David Rohde are producers, with Harlin Lawal and Will Mavronicolas as co-producers. Bradford Young is director of photography, with Walter Fasano and Christian Sandino-Taylor editing.
Australian release schedule
The first two episodes of JAŸ-Z IN 8 will stream on MUBI in Australia from Saturday 19 September. Two new episodes will then debut each Saturday until the finale arrives on Saturday 10 October.
