FX’s The Shards premieres on Disney+ this August – A world of privilege, paranoia and deadly obsession is set to unfold on Disney+ when FX’s highly anticipated drama series The Shards premieres this August.
Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ bestselling novel and executive produced by Ryan Murphy, the series will debut exclusively on Disney+ in Australia on Thursday, 6 August.
A coming-of-age story with a sinister twist
Set in Los Angeles during the 1980s, The Shards follows a group of wealthy teenagers attending an elite prep school, where appearances can be deceiving and danger lurks beneath the surface.
At the centre of the story is Bret, played by The Fall of the House of Usher star Igby Rigney. An aspiring writer with a keen eye for observation, Bret’s world begins to unravel with the arrival of enigmatic new student Robert Mallory.
Portrayed by Homer Gere, Robert transfers into the school just before senior year, bringing with him an air of mystery that quickly captivates those around him.
His arrival also coincides with a wave of fear sweeping Los Angeles, as a serial killer known as The Trawler targets teenagers across the city.
A glamorous world hiding dark secrets
Bret’s inner circle includes Susan Reynolds (Kaia Gerber), Debbie Schaffer (Hayes Warner) and Thom Wright (Graham Campbell), whose seemingly perfect lives are shaped by wealth, beauty and excess.
Yet behind the glamorous façade lies a world fuelled by jealousy, desire and dangerous obsession.
The adults surrounding the teenagers are equally complex, with Wes Bentley starring as Terry Schaffer, Evan Rachel Wood as Liz Schaffer and Jordan Roth as Steven Reinhardt.
Ryan Murphy tackles Bret Easton Ellis
The series represents a collaboration between two of America’s most distinctive creative voices.
Murphy, known for projects including American Horror Story, Feud and Monsters, brings Ellis’ provocative coming-of-age thriller to the screen.
First published in 2023, Ellis’ novel quickly attracted acclaim for its blend of psychological suspense, nostalgia and social commentary.
With its themes of identity, manipulation and fear, The Shards promises to deliver a compelling and unsettling drama for audiences.
A summer of suspense begins
Combining mystery, psychological tension and the excesses of 1980s Los Angeles, The Shards is shaping up to be one of Disney+’s most talked-about drama premieres of the year.
For fans of atmospheric thrillers and morally complex storytelling, it could become essential viewing.
