Apple TV this week: The Last First: Winter K2 leads 2 October premieres – Apple TV’s Friday, 2 October slate pairs the debut of the climbing documentary The Last First: Winter K2 with a second season of The Sisters Grimm. The same week also brings the Women in Blue season-two finale and new chapters of seven returning series.

For Australian viewers, the most local story in the line-up is Last Seen, a thriller set and filmed in Victoria that reaches its penultimate episode. It sits alongside two other stories approaching their season endings: Women in Blue and Ted Lasso. This makes the week as much about catching up before a finale as finding a new premiere.

All the programmes below are available through Apple TV in Australia. Friday arrivals include the two premieres and fresh episodes of Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars and Dark Matter; several other episodes arrived earlier in the week.

The Last First: Winter K2 premieres

Filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev takes viewers to the winter ascent of K2 in The Last First: Winter K2. The documentary follows a 2021 expedition involving Icelandic mountaineer John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani father-and-son climbers Ali and Sajid Sadpara. They set out to become the first to reach the summit in winter, when the mountain is at its most unforgiving.

Their attempt unfolds amid a changing climbing culture. Influencers and film crews, commercial expedition clients and Nepalese mountaineer Nims with his team of Sherpas share the mountain. Rather than treating the ascent solely as a test of endurance, the film examines strategy, class, caste, money and power under life-and-death conditions.

Bar-Lev is also among the executive producers. The executive-producing team includes James Packer, Will Kane, Drew Buckley, Taylor Levin, Isabel San Vargas, Kerstin Emhoff and Ali Brown. The Last First: Winter K2 makes its global Apple TV debut on Friday, 2 October.

The Sisters Grimm returns for season two

The Sisters Grimm returns on the same day. Based on Michael Buckley’s books, the animated adventure follows Sabrina and Daphne Grimm, sisters descended from the Brothers Grimm. One year after their parents vanished, they continue searching for answers in Ferryport Landing, a place where fairy tales and their creatures are real.

The girls have different personalities, but their investigations work because they act as a team. Season two brings more mysteries as they uncover the town’s secrets and the story behind their parents’ disappearance. The voice cast includes Ariel Winter as Sabrina, Leah Newman as Daphne, Laraine Newman as Relda, Abubakar Salim as Charming, Billy Harris as Puck and Harry Trevaldwyn as Mirror.

The second season premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, 2 October. It offers a family-viewing alternative to the week’s more intense documentary and dramas.

Women in Blue reaches its season-two finale

The eighth and final episode of Las Azules, also known as Women in Blue, is now streaming. Titled “Goyo”, it sends the Azules racing to connect the clues before the Executioner strikes again. The finale follows a season in which newly promoted lieutenant María faces a conflict between the rules she is meant to uphold and her drive to uncover the truth.

The case begins with the body of a student activist and reaches back to the 1968 student massacre. Another death linked to that history sends shockwaves through the police department. María and her colleagues Valentina, Gabina and Ángeles must work both inside and outside a system marked by corruption. The question of what their ideals cost them gives the investigation a personal edge.

Bárbara Mori, Ximena Sariñana, Natalia Téllez and Amorita Rasgado lead the cast, alongside Miguel Rodarte, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Christian Tappan, Horacio García Rojas and Bruno Bichir. Lemon Studios produces the Apple TV series, created by Fernando Rovzar and Pablo Aramendi, with Rovzar, Wendy Riss, Alejandro Lozano, Erica Sánchez Su and Billy Rovzar among its executive producers.

Last Seen and Ted Lasso approach their finales

The fifth episode of Last Seen, “The Prophet”, is the Australian thriller’s penultimate chapter. Henry and Jenna’s past may hold the key to Maggie’s disappearance. Patrick Brammall plays Ian Ridley, a former police detective now working as a dispatcher. His daughter Maggie vanished 11 years earlier, and a distress call from a teenage girl convinces him that she may still be alive.

Set and filmed in Victoria, the six-part series adapts Ryan David Jahn’s novel The Dispatcher. Kris Mrksa writes and executive produces, while Christian Schwochow directs and executive produces. Maxine Peake, Brendan Cowell, Daniel Henshall, Jessica Wren, Zahra Newman and newcomer Chloe Jean Lourdes also appear. Producers include 60Forty Films and Werner Film Productions; Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta and Joanna Werner are among the executive producers.

The fifth episode is available now, with the final episode due Wednesday, 7 October. For viewers following an Australian-made Apple TV drama, this is the week to catch up before Ian’s search reaches its conclusion.

Ted Lasso is also one episode from its season-four finish. In episode nine, “Mae Rides the Bus”, morale is low but the stakes are high. Mae joins the team on the road and Keeley has news. This season has brought Ted back to Richmond to coach a second-division women’s football side, a new challenge that asks the team to take chances before it knows the outcome.

Jason Sudeikis stars and executive produces. Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt and Jeremy Swift are among the returning performers, while Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern and Grant Feely join season four. Jack Burditt serves as an executive producer. The ninth episode is streaming now, and the next Wednesday release is scheduled for 7 October.

New episodes of Brothers, Knife Edge, Slow Horses and Dark Matter

Brothers continues with episode three, “Little Woody”. In the eight-part comedy, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play fictionalised versions of themselves. A family gathering leads to a long-buried suggestion that they could actually be brothers, sending Woody in search of answers while Matthew faces a possible run for Governor of Texas.

Holland Taylor plays Ma Mac, whose revelation sets the premise in motion. The cast also includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan and Oona Yaffe. This week’s episode sees Ma Mac want the Harrelsons out, prompting Woody to devise a plan to buy more time. New episodes follow on Wednesdays through 4 November.

The food-world documentary Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars reaches its third season-two episode on Friday. “Could you imagine losing one?” follows the closing stages of Florida’s Michelin race, where a chef risks losing a hard-won star. Across its eight episodes, the series tracks 16 restaurants at turning points, from a tiny island business seeking Michelin recognition to chefs rebuilding after voluntarily surrendering a star.

Food and travel presenter Jesse Burgess hosts. Gordon Ramsay and Studio Ramsay Global executive produce the series, which continues with new Friday episodes through 6 November. Its appeal lies in seeing the personal and business stakes behind a guidebook decision, not just the finished dishes.

On the drama side, Slow Horses season six has reached episode three, “Resurrection”. Jackson Lamb’s Slough House spies remain caught in a high-stakes cycle of retaliation and revenge. Former Slow Horses return as assassins close in, while Diana Taverner deals with the fallout from a television interview.

Gary Oldman leads the cast as Lamb. Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Rosalind Eleazar, Joanna Scanlan, Samuel West, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke, Jonathan Pryce and Hugo Weaving are also in the ensemble, with Lenny Rush joining the season. New Wednesday episodes continue through 21 October.

Finally, Dark Matter season two releases episode six, “What the Universe is Made Of”, on Friday. Daniela meets someone from her past; Jason pursues his dream; and Leighton unveils a project. The series, based on Blake Crouch’s novel, follows Jason Dessen and his family through alternate lives and the consequences of trying to find a safe reality.

Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly lead the cast, alongside Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley and Amanda Brugel. Season two finds the Dessens under renewed pressure as Jason’s interest in the Box deepens and Daniela becomes increasingly uneasy. Friday episodes are scheduled through 30 October.
