AUSSIES IN ACTION
Skateboarding
- Arisa Trew has become the youngest Gold medallist in Australian Olympic history by taking out the Women’s Skateboard Park Final. The 14-year-old from the Gold Coast put down a solid second run to move into medal contention then further impressed the judges with her third and final trip around the park to finish on top.
Track Cycling
- The Men’s Team Sprint have scored Australia’s first medal on the Paris Velodrome, winning the Bronze medal race over France. For Matt Glaetzer, it was his first Olympic medal at his fourth Games.
- Australia’s Men’s Team Pursuit foursome set a new World Record in the first round and now move into the Gold medal Race against Great Britain.
- Australia’s Women’s Team Pursuit team have finished sixth in qualifying and now move through to the first round.
Canoe Sprint
- Australia experienced a successful opening day on the flatwater with crews moving through to the Semi-Finals of the Men’s and Women’s K4 500 as well as the Men’s and Women’s K2 500.
Athletics
- Jessica Hull and Georgia Griffith are straight through to the Women’s 1500m Semi-Finals after top-eight finishes in their heats. Linden Hall will attempt to join them through the Repechage.
- After qualifying via the Repechage, Alanah Yukich bowed out of the Women’s 400m Hurdles in the Semi-Finals.
- Reece Holder just missed a spot in the Men’s 400m Final after finishing fifth in his Semi-Final.
Sailing
- After the final two races of the preliminary rounds were cancelled yesterday, the Men’s Dinghy Medal Race was also postponed overnight delaying Matt Wearn’s quest for back-to-back Gold medals.
Beach Volleyball
- Tokyo Silver medallists Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy will have the opportunity to stand on another Olympic podium following their three-set Quarter-Final victory over Switzerland. They will play either Latvia or Brazil in the Semi-Finals.
Basketball
- Serbia staged a comeback for the ages, scoring an overtime victory over the Boomers in the Men’s Quarter-Finals after trailing by as much as 24 points in the first half. While Patty Mills scored a clutch basket in the dying seconds to tie the scores up at full-time, they couldn’t keep the momentum with Serbia moving on to the next round.
Water Polo
- The Stingers will play for an Olympic medal for the first time since London 2012 following a 9-6 Quarter-Final victory over Greece.
- They will play the winners of the Hungary-USA clash while Netherlands and Spain will meet in the semis following their Quarter-Final wins.
Diving
- Kurtis Mathews is through to the final on Olympic debut, finishing eighth in the Men’s 3m Springboard preliminaries.
- Sydney schoolgirl Ellie Cole finished seventh on debut in the Women’s 10m Platform Final with Melissa Wu finishing 11th in her fifth straight Olympic Final
INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Athletics
- After finishing third in Tokyo, Gabby Thomas (USA) stormed to victory in the Women’s 200m, beating home 100m Gold medallist Julien Alfred (LCA) and Brittany Brown (USA).
- World Champion Miltiadis Tentoglou (GRE) has defended his Olympic Gold medal with victory in the Men’s Long Jump over Wayne Pinnock (JAM) and Mattia Furlani (ITA).
- Cole Hocker scored a major boilover in the Men’s 1500m, taking an inside run down the final straight to overhaul pre-race favourites Jakob Ingebrigtsen (NOR) and Josh Kerr (GBR) to win in Olympic Record time.
- Canada has claimed Gold in both Hammer Throw events in Paris following Camryn Roger’s victory overnight. She took the title with an effort almost 1.5m further than her nearest opponents.
- Brunei’s Winfred Yavi outlasted Peruth Chemutai (UGA) in a final straight sprint to win the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase in Olympic Record time.
Track Cycling
- Netherlands won the first Men’s Gold medal on the track, defeating Great Britain in the Team Sprint Gold Medal Race, with Australia taking Bronze.
Basketball
- The race for the medals is heating up in the Men’s competition following the Quarter-Finals overnight.
- Serbia will face the winner of USA and Brazil following their overtime victory over Australia
- Germany were too good for Greece scoring a 13-point win and will now face the home nation who upset Canada 82-73.
Football
- USA will go at least one step higher on the Olympic podium than they were in Tokyo, qualifying for the Gold Medal Match with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Germany.
- They will play the winner of Brazil v Spain which is currently in progress.
Diving
- China took the top two spots on the Women’s 10m Platform podium with Quan Hongchan’s victory set up with perfect 10s on her opening dive.
