Tonight | Death Proof on SBS 2: Tarantino’s stuntman thriller premieres – Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof makes its SBS 2 channel premiere. Kurt Russell plays a scarred stuntman who stalks his victims using cars he considers death proof. It airs Tuesday 20 October 2026 at 8:30pm on SBS 2, with streaming on SBS On Demand.
The film draws on the dusty, violent, V8-fuelled exploitation cinema of the 1970s. Its channel premiere gives viewers a chance to see Tarantino’s take on that particular style of action and menace on free-to-air television.
Kurt Russell behind the wheel
Russell’s stuntman is the centre of the thriller. He uses his cars as weapons, turning the promise of protection implied by the title into a threat for other people. The character’s scars and profession are part of the film’s deliberately rough-edged world.
An exploitation-film homage
Tarantino frames Death Proof as a tribute to an era of hard-driving, low-budget genre movies, including Australian exploitation films. The interest is as much in the style of the filmmaking as in the pursuit itself: loud engines, physical danger and the tension of a road that offers little safety. The SBS 2 screening is a channel premiere, with the film also available through SBS On Demand.
