Tonight | Royals and Their Gardens on SBS: Hampton Court Palace opens its historic grounds – Professor Suzannah Lipscomb opens a new garden series at Hampton Court Palace, tracing centuries of royal design and botanical history. It airs Saturday 17 October 2026 at 7.30pm on SBS and SBS On Demand.

The palace grounds show how one place can contain several eras of English court life, from Tudor ambitions to later formal garden schemes.

Episode 1: Hampton Court Palace

Cardinal Wolsey helped shape the gardens in the 16th century before Henry VIII expanded them. The episode moves through spaces including the Privy Garden and Great Fountain Garden.

The Great Vine is described as the world’s oldest and largest grapevine, while the Hampton Court Maze adds a different kind of attraction. The gardens also hold associations with Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard.
