Tonight | Cold Summer on SBS: a moneylender’s murder exposes a larger threat – A moneylender’s murder opens the eight-part Italian crime drama Cold Summer. The series premieres Tuesday 27 October at 11pm on SBS, with the first episode also available free on SBS On Demand.
Set in Bari in 1992, the drama begins amid killings, ambushes and disappearances. The violence unsettles a southern Italian city that had been thought beyond the Mafia’s reach.
Fenoglio questions a small case
The murdered moneylender appears, at first, to be a minor case that can be put aside quickly. Marshal Fenoglio of the Carabinieri Operational Unit is not convinced. He believes the details point to something larger than a routine investigation.
Fenoglio’s theories often put him at odds with his superiors. That tension matters from the opening episode: the question is not only who killed the moneylender, but whether investigators are willing to recognise the scale of what may be forming around them.
Threat in Bari’s underworld
Fenoglio suspects the local small-time underworld is taking shape as a far more dangerous organisation. The series’ opening places that possibility against the wider violence in Bari. It leaves the marshal trying to connect a seemingly contained murder with a city increasingly covered in blood.
Cold Summer airs Tuesday 27 October 2026 at 11pm on SBS and streams on SBS On Demand.
