The Odyssey home release date set for Australia with 90 minutes of extras – Christopher Nolan’s mythic epic will be available to own in Australia from 18 November 2026 on digital retail platforms, 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment says the release arrives months before the film is available through a subscription streaming service. Its Australian technical sheet also lists a DVD edition for the same date.
For viewers who missed the film in cinemas, this is the first announced home-viewing window. It is a purchase release, not an announcement that The Odyssey is joining a subscription catalogue. Universal has not named an Australian subscription service or given a streaming date.
The studio is positioning the home edition around its making-of material as much as the film itself. Selected formats will carry more than 90 minutes of extras, including a 12-part behind-the-scenes collection personally overseen by Nolan. The announcement does not specify which extras appear on every individual format, so buyers should check the edition’s listed contents before purchasing.
What is included in The Odyssey home release?
The 12 behind-the-scenes pieces follow the adaptation from early decisions to the final sound mix. Plotting a Course examines Nolan’s approach to Homer’s story, while Icons explores the characters through casting, costume, hair, makeup and performance. The Widest Window looks at the director’s long-held ambition to make the film and the scale of its production.
On Location follows the cast and crew through demanding international locations. The Horse details the design of the Trojan Horse, and The Fall of Troy visits the large Moroccan set, where lighting, armies and practical construction helped create the battle. Ithaca shows how a castle on Italy’s Favignana island and studio interiors were combined to build Odysseus’ home.
For the action, Battle Ready brings Matt Damon, Tom Holland and the stunt team together. Apparent Magic covers the interplay of special and visual effects, while The Sea People goes aboard the modified ships and into the storm work used for the voyage. Composer Ludwig Göransson explains his use of ancient instruments, voices and experimentation in The Score. Finally, Bringing It Home looks at editing and sound design in post-production.
Additional listed material includes The Journey of Film on The Odyssey, in which Reece Feldman asks Nolan what happens to the film after shooting; an IMAX-exclusive prologue; trailers; and the music video for “When I’m Home” by James Blake, Travis Scott and Göransson. Universal notes that special-feature availability depends on the selected format. It has not provided an edition-by-edition breakdown in the Australian announcement.
Digital, 4K, Blu-ray and DVD details for Australia
The 18 November date covers digital ownership and the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray discs in Universal’s main announcement. The attached Australian and New Zealand specifications also give 18 November as the DVD street date. Four 4K products are listed: a UHD/Blu-ray combo, two limited-edition steelbooks and an ultimate collector’s edition. The announcement does not give Australian prices or name the local digital retailers.
The 4K and Blu-ray specifications list a 2-hour, 52-minute and 24-second running time. The DVD specifications list 2 hours, 45 minutes and 31 seconds. That is a difference of six minutes and 53 seconds; the material does not explain it, so buyers seeking a particular cut should check the finished product details. All three disc formats carry an Australian M classification for mature themes, violence and coarse language, and list a 1.78:1 picture ratio.
Universal lists DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 English sound for both the 4K and Blu-ray versions, with additional European-language options. The DVD lists English Dolby Digital 5.1. The 4K format also offers HDR, but the release does not identify a specific HDR format in the Australian technical information.
Nolan’s Homer adaptation
Written and directed by Nolan and based on Homer’s Odyssey, the film follows the legendary voyage through a world of heroes, gods and monsters. Damon leads the cast alongside Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Samantha Morton, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron.
Nolan produced the film with Emma Thomas. His returning creative collaborators include cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema and editor Jennifer Lame. Ruth De Jong handled production design, Ellen Mirojnick designed the costumes, and Göransson composed the score. Universal says the film has passed US$1.7 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing release in both Nolan’s career and the studio’s history.
