Shrek 5 unveils first teaser as Zendaya joins the beloved franchise – After years of speculation and anticipation, it’s official – Shrek is back.
Universal Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5, confirming the next chapter in one of the world’s most successful animated franchises will arrive exclusively in cinemas in June 2027.
Comedy icons Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all returning to their signature roles as Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona, reuniting the trio that helped redefine animated storytelling more than two decades ago.
Joining the cast is Emmy Award-winning actress Zendaya, who will voice Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona. Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo have also been cast as Felicia’s brothers, Fergus and Farkle.
Shrek 5 reunites the franchise with several creative forces who helped shape its original success. Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn return to direct the new film, with both filmmakers bringing extensive experience from previous Shrek instalments. Vernon has also voiced fan-favourite character Gingy throughout the franchise.
The film is produced by Gina Shay, who worked on Shrek Forever After, alongside Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, whose credits include The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Despicable Me and Minions franchises. Brad Ableson serves as co-director.
Since the original Shrek debuted in 2001, the franchise has become a global phenomenon. The first film made history as the inaugural winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, while the four films collectively have grossed more than US$2.9 billion at the worldwide box office.
Beyond cinema, Shrek has expanded into stage productions, theme park attractions and live experiences, cementing its place as one of the most recognisable entertainment brands of the 21st century.
Now, with the release of the first teaser trailer, audiences have their first glimpse at the next adventure awaiting everyone’s favourite ogre and his fairytale family.
Shrek 5 opens exclusively in Australian cinemas in June 2027.
