The National Theatre Live presentation puts O’Connor in the role of Joe Bonaparte, a gifted violinist in 1930s New York. O’Connor, known for The Crown and Challengers, returns to the stage in a production that also features Hayley Squires and Daniel Mays. It is his first stage role since playing Romeo in the National Theatre’s filmed Romeo and Juliet in 2021.
Olivier Award-winning director Sam Yates, whose work includes Vanya, directs Odets’ play. A live string quartet forms part of the production, reinforcing the pull of music in Joe’s life even as boxing offers him another route forward.
