Fatherland trailer: Sandra Hüller film sets November cinema release – Paweł Pawlikowski’s award-winning new film Fatherland, starring Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler, will open in Australian and New Zealand cinemas on Thursday, 12 November 2026.
MUBI and Madman Entertainment have released a new trailer and artwork for the film following its world premiere in Official Competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where Pawlikowski shared the Best Director award.
For Australian cinema audiences, Fatherland is a notable arthouse release: it reunites the director of Ida and Cold War with a story of family, exile and identity set against post-war Europe.

What is Fatherland about?
Fatherland centres on the relationship between Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann, played by Zischler, and his daughter Erika Mann, played by Hüller. In the summer of 1949, the pair travel in a black Buick from US-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar, through a Germany still in ruins.
After 16 years in exile in the United States, Thomas Mann returns to a divided homeland while confronting fractures within his own family. The cast also includes August Diehl, Devid Striesow and Anna Madeley.
Pawlikowski wrote the film with Henk Handloegten and reunites with cinematographer Łukasz Żal, costume designer Aleksandra Staszko, and production designers Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński.
