Doctor Who: The Satan Pit extended cut brings the Tenth Doctor and Rose to cinemas – David Tennant and Billie Piper are returning to the big screen. The one-night-only Doctor Who event revisits one of their darkest adventures.
Doctor Who: The Satan Pit Extended Cut will screen in Australia on Monday, 23 November 2026. It combines the 2006 episodes The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit into a newly edited movie-length experience.
For Australian fans, the event offers a rare cinema outing for the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler era. It is more than a simple television repeat. In addition, previously deleted material and new extended footage have been restored. An exclusive interview also adds fresh production context 20 years after the original broadcast.
The Tenth Doctor and Rose return for Doctor Who Day
BBC Studios, CinemaLive and Fathom Entertainment will take the special to more than 1,000 cinemas. The six participating territories are Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States and Canada.
The date is significant. Doctor Who Day is observed every year on 23 November. It marks the anniversary of the programme’s first BBC episode in 1963.
This 2026 event also celebrates two decades since Tennant’s Tenth Doctor travelled with Piper’s Rose. Their partnership helped define the early years of the revived series. Meanwhile, The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit remains one of its most ambitious two-part stories.
What happens in The Satan Pit?
The TARDIS lands on Sanctuary Base 6, a remote human outpost orbiting a black hole. Beneath the surface, the base crew discovers an ancient prison. Its mysterious presence challenges the Doctor’s understanding of the universe.
As the situation deteriorates, the Doctor and Rose confront the Ood and the Beast. The story mixes science fiction, horror and high emotional stakes. It also introduces the Ood, who later became a recurring part of modern Doctor Who.
The cinema version joins both episodes into one continuous feature. It restores deleted scenes that were previously available only on DVD. Furthermore, it adds extended footage that audiences have not seen before.
James Strong revisits the making of the episodes
The screening will also include an exclusive interview with director and producer James Strong. The International Emmy and multiple BAFTA winner reflects on the production. In particular, he revisits its scale, atmosphere and practical creature work.
BBC Studios Global Events Director Natasha Spence said the new cut showed how established Doctor Who stories could still offer something different.
“Part of what makes Doctor Who so extraordinary is that there is always more to discover. Even with a story as loved as The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, we’re able to offer fans something they haven’t experienced before, with previously deleted scenes restored into the adventure and never-before-seen extended footage included in this special cinema cut.”
However, Spence said Doctor Who Day was also the right moment to bring the Tenth Doctor and Rose story to cinemas for the first time.
Meanwhile, CinemaLive Head of Acquisitions and Distribution John Travers said the expansion followed a strong response in UK and Irish cinemas.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with BBC Studios again and expanding the scope of this very special Doctor Who Day cinema event so that Whovians from the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can also come together and join in this big screen celebration.”

Australian tickets and streaming availability
Tickets go on sale from 9am local time on Friday, 25 September 2026. Afterwards, participating Australian cinemas and session details will be listed through the official event website.
