Day Drinker teaser trailer reunites Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz – Johnny Depp, Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz are heading into dangerous waters in the first teaser for the new thriller Day Drinker. The film will open in Australian cinemas on 25 March 2027.

The teaser introduces a luxury-yacht setting that quickly turns menacing. Cline plays a private-yacht bartender who encounters a mysterious passenger, played by Depp. Soon, both characters enter the orbit of a criminal figure played by Cruz.

For Australian audiences, the launch offers the first substantial look at the film’s central trio. It also confirms the local cinema date. As a result, the isolated yacht becomes the setting for a character-led thriller. Hidden connections, secrecy and shifting loyalties drive the story.

The first footage moves from the apparent glamour of life aboard a private yacht into darker territory. Depp’s passenger arrives with questions around his identity and intentions. Meanwhile, Cline’s bartender becomes increasingly entangled in events beyond her control.

The official synopsis keeps the characters’ deeper connection under wraps. It says the bartender and guest become entangled with Cruz’s criminal figure before discovering that they are connected in unexpected ways.

Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz reunite

Day Drinker brings Depp and Cruz together again. Their previous collaborations include Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Murder on the Orient Express. This time, the early material places Cruz in a position of threat and authority over the yacht-bound pair.

In addition, Cline joins them after leading Netflix’s Outer Banks. Her film credits include Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The compact premise gives the three performers a clear dramatic triangle: an employee, an enigmatic visitor and the criminal force pulling them together.

Marc Webb directs the new thriller

Marc Webb directs Day Drinker from a screenplay by Zach Dean. Previously, Webb directed the romantic comedy-drama (500) Days of Summer. His credits also include the two Amazing Spider-Man films and Disney’s live-action Snow White.

Meanwhile, Dean’s recent screenwriting credits include The Tomorrow War and The Gorge. He also serves as a producer on Day Drinker alongside Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner and Nathan Kahane.

The teaser poster supports the footage’s darker direction. It centres Depp’s character in a stark image with the line “Step into the dark”. However, the trailer leaves the characters’ unexpected connection as the central mystery.
