Prime Video expands local slate with three new Australian originals – Prime Video has commissioned three Australian documentary series, with a slate spanning true crime and sport set to begin launching globally from 2027.
The new commissions are Free Spirits: The Backpacker Poisonings (working title), Madness of Three and the fourth season of cricket docuseries The Test.
For Australian viewers, the announcement is another sign of Prime Video’s continuing investment in locally made stories with global reach. The service says it has commissioned 34 Australian Prime Originals since 2019, across scripted, documentary, unscripted, comedy and sports programming.
Three new Australian Prime Originals
Free Spirits: The Backpacker Poisonings reconstructs the 2024 Laos tragedy in which eight young backpackers, including two Australians, became ill after a night out. Six died and one of the two survivors was left permanently blind. The three-part series will draw on the travellers’ own footage, final messages, and testimony from the survivor and victims’ families. Cineflix produces the series for Amazon MGM Studios.
Madness of Three, produced by Blackfella Films, examines the 2022 Wieambilla murders in Queensland. The five-part series explores the conspiracy, delusion and online influence surrounding Nathaniel, Stacey and Gareth Train, whose attack left two police officers and a neighbour dead.
Meanwhile, The Test returns for a fourth season as the Australian men’s Test team prepares for major challenges including a return to South Africa, a five-Test series in India, the 150th Anniversary Test and the 2027 Ashes. Cricket Australia, Whooshka Media and Amazon MGM Studios are producing the new season.
Prime Video’s head of Australian and New Zealand Originals, Sarah Christie, said the commissions reflected a commitment to stories that matter locally, from sporting moments to true-crime cases, while also connecting with viewers around the world.
