For Australian audiences, the release arrives just months after Melbourne hosted its first regular-season NFL game. It also lands as interest in the league continues to grow locally. However, the film is not simply a sporting biography. It follows the friendship and creative partnership that carried Madden from the sidelines to broadcasting and then into one of the world’s most recognisable video-game franchises.
The trailer, poster and first images put Cage and Bale at the centre of that story. They are joined by Kathryn Hahn, Sienna Miller, John Mulaney and Shane Gillis.
From the Raiders to Madden NFL
Inspired by the life of John Madden, the film traces his journey alongside best friend and fellow original Al Davis. Their association begins with a Super Bowl-winning partnership at the Raiders. It then follows Madden as he becomes football’s most recognisable television voice.
Meanwhile, another unlikely chapter begins to take shape. Madden’s ideas help build the worldwide Madden NFL video-game series, introducing generations of players to the sport and turning his name into a global entertainment brand.
The story also looks beyond Madden’s public achievements. It explores his partnership with his wife Virginia, his lifelong friendships and the infectious love of people and football that underpinned his career.
Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale lead the cast
Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage plays John Madden, while Academy Award winner Christian Bale portrays Al Davis. Kathryn Hahn, Sienna Miller and John Mulaney also appear, with Shane Gillis completing the announced principal cast.
David O. Russell directs the film from a screenplay he wrote with Cambron Clark. Russell is also among the producers alongside Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Jonathan Shukat, Matthew Budman and Colin Wilson.
David Bloomfield, Constance Schwartz-Morini and Michael Strahan serve as executive producers. Amazon MGM Studios presents the project as an Escape Artists, ShowKat and Dreamcrew Entertainment production, in association with Skydance Sports and NFL Films.
