2027 Paramount Upfront: Sam Kerr Kicking Goals becomes a Paramount+ series – Sam Kerr Kicking Goals is becoming a live-action television series for Paramount+ in 2027. Inspired by the books Kerr co-wrote with Fiona Harris, the Australian commission returns to the footballer’s childhood in Western Australia, long before she captained the Matildas and played for Chelsea.

For viewers and young players, this is a different Sam Kerr story from a match documentary or career retrospective. The lead is an 11-year-old girl learning with friends, juggling school and family and finding her place in football. Paramount+ is planning a nationwide casting search and a Western Australian shoot, giving the adaptation a strong local base.

From the books to a screen story

The series follows Sam and her two best friends as their football journey moves from an underdog team toward bigger ambitions. Along the way, they face the ordinary difficulties of growing up as well as the pressure and excitement of sport. The books’ premise gives the television version a way to present Kerr’s story to children who may know her first as a national-team star.

Kerr said seeing the stories adapted for screen felt unusual and special.

It’s pretty surreal knowing that Kicking Goals is being adapted into a TV series. These stories are all about believing in yourself and having a go, so it feels really special that a whole new generation will get to experience them on screen.

Sam Kerr, footballer and co-author

She is looking forward to the casting of the young actor who will play her. Paramount+ says the search for young performers to portray Sam and her friends is already under way across Australia. Filming will take place in Western Australia, although dates and the finished cast have not been announced.

Who is making Sam Kerr Kicking Goals?

Orange Entertainment Co. is producing for Paramount+ Australia. Screen Australia and Screenwest are providing major production investment in association with Minderoo, Paramount+ Australia and The Post Lounge Group. Screenwest, Lotterywest and Screen Queensland supported development.

Diya Eid created the series and is among its writers with Mithila Gupta, Sara Khan and Loani Arman. Meg O’Connell is producer. Tig Terera and Rebecca O’Brien will direct. Executive producers are Dan Lake, Kurt Royan, Georgia Woodward, Florian Schroeder and Sam Kerr, with Sophia Mogford overseeing the project for Paramount+.

The commission arrives in a significant year for women’s football on the platform. Every FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 match is set to stream live on Paramount+. Pairing that event with a scripted series about one of Australia’s best-known players connects the live tournament to a story aimed at the next generation of football fans.
