2027 Paramount Upfront: Melanie Lynskey leads Mushroom Murders – Paramount+ has commissioned Mushroom Murders, a six-part Australian drama starring and executive produced by Melanie Lynskey. The limited series will explore the 97 days between the 2023 lunch at Erin Patterson’s Victorian home and her subsequent arrest, rather than attempting to cover the entire case in a single narrative.
This is one of the most prominent local scripted commissions in Paramount+’s 2027 upfront slate. It combines a story that drew intense national attention with a team of Australian writers and director Daina Reid, and it brings together an Australian creative team. The production is a dramatization; the release’s description of events should be read in that context.
The story and its time frame
Lynskey will portray Erin Patterson. In 2023, Patterson served individual beef wellingtons to estranged in-laws and relatives at a lunch in Victoria. The guests were exposed to highly toxic death cap mushrooms and three died. Mushroom Murders concentrates on the period from that lunch to Patterson’s arrest 97 days later. The limited frame gives the series a defined investigative and dramatic arc.
Paramount+ is promoting the series with the line “There’s More to Unearth.” It has not announced a premiere date or full cast in the material supplied for the upfront. Lynskey is known to Paramount+ audiences from Yellowjackets and joins the new series as an executive producer as well as its lead actor.
Australian creative team and production
Anya Beyersdorf, Daina Reid and Deb Balderstone created the series. Beyersdorf, whose credits include Fake and Apple Cider Vinegar, writes and executive produces. Reid will direct all six episodes and also serves as an executive producer. Beyersdorf shares writing duties with Dianne Taylor and Belinda Chayko.
SOAPBOX PICTURES is producing. Balderstone and Xavier Marchand are executive producers, while Sophia Mogford serves as executive producer for Paramount+.
Beverley McGarvey, President Network 10 and Head of Streaming, Paramount Australia, said the project was intended as a significant addition to the platform’s premium drama slate.
This is an ambitious series that brings a gripping real-life story, that captivated Australia and the world, to the screen with the scale, quality and creative vision audiences expect from Paramount+.

The announcement comes alongside other Paramount+ commissions, including the Clueless sequel series with Alicia Silverstone, Laird with Kenneth Branagh, The Best of Us with Jeremy Strong, Fear Not with Anne Hathaway and Discretion with Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning. Mushroom Murders stands out in that group as a drama based on a recent Australian case.
