Steps teaser: Netflix puts Cinderella’s sisters centre stage – Netflix has unveiled teaser art and the first teaser for Steps, an animated feature that turns the Cinderella story around by placing its so-called “evil” stepsisters at the heart of the adventure.
The film arrives on Netflix on 20 November. Ali Wong voices Lilith, a stepsister tired of living in Cinderella’s shadow, while Stephanie Hsu plays her sister Margot.
Lilith steals the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand, voiced by Bette Midler, and hijacks the Royal Ball. The plan upends the familiar fairy-tale order and allows Priscilla, voiced by Nikki Glaser, to seize the throne.
A different path through the fairy tale
The disruption sends Lilith into an unlikely alliance with Cinderella, voiced by Amanda Seyfried. Their journey takes them through biker trolls, henchmen and the Screaming Woods as they try to save the kingdom — and work out what their relationship can become after years of resentment.
Alyce Tzue and John Ripa direct Steps. The feature is produced by Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing, with Poehler’s Paper Kite among the producing companies.
The screenplay is credited to Ava Tramer, James Madejski, Jen Chuck, Dana Schwartz and Felicia Ho, from a story by that group with Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci. The wider voice cast includes Daniel Radcliffe, Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage and Damian Priest, while Kris Bowers provides the score.
Netflix’s teaser positions Steps as a comic, character-led reworking of one of animation’s best-known fairy tales, with the women traditionally pushed to the margins now driving the action.
