Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma sets MUBI streaming date – Jane Schoenbrun’s Cannes Queer Palm-winning horror film will stream exclusively on MUBI in Australia from 2 October 2026.
The Australian streaming launch gives local viewers a chance to see Schoenbrun’s third feature after its acclaimed festival run. Led by Hacks star Hannah Einbinder and The X-Files and Sex Education star Gillian Anderson, the film combines slasher mythology, dark comedy and a story about desire, identity and the powerful hold of movie fandom.
For MUBI, the film also adds a prominent new release to its Australian spring line-up. Its arrival follows the film’s Queer Palm win at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, while the official MUBI listing describes the 112-minute United States-Canada production as an LGBTQ+ comedy-horror.
A slasher franchise returns from the dead
After years of rushed sequels and declining interest, the fictional Camp Miasma slasher series is handed to an enthusiastic young director who hopes to bring it back to life. Her research takes her to the franchise’s original star, a now-reclusive actress surrounded by mystery.
However, their meeting soon draws both women into a blood-soaked world of fear, delirium and attraction. Rather than simply recreating a familiar slasher formula, the film uses the attempted remake to examine who gets to control movie mythology and what happens when audiences, creators and performers become trapped inside it.
Schoenbrun wrote and directed the film, continuing the filmmaker’s deeply personal exploration of trans identity, media obsession and queer horror. It follows We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and I Saw the TV Glow, completing a trio of features interested in the way screens, stories and fan cultures can reshape a person’s sense of self.
Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson lead the cast
Einbinder and Anderson are joined by a broad ensemble cast featuring Amanda Fix, Arthur Conti, Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, Sarah Sherman, Patrick Fischler, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Kevin McDonald, Quintessa Swindell and Jack Haven.
The pairing of Einbinder and Anderson sits at the centre of the film’s collision between a younger filmmaker eager to reclaim the franchise and the performer whose history is inseparable from it. MUBI’s announcement highlights the relationship between the two women as the emotional core of a story filled with blood, desire and movie-world mythology.
A celebrated Cannes debut
The film arrives on streaming with strong festival credentials. Its Queer Palm victory at Cannes recognised the film’s place within international LGBTQ+ cinema, while the critical notices collected by MUBI praised Schoenbrun’s distinctive visual approach, humour and blend of beauty with horror.
The release further establishes Schoenbrun as one of contemporary cinema’s most individual voices. Across three features, the filmmaker has repeatedly turned genre storytelling into a way of exploring identity and the intimate relationships people build with popular culture.
