La Mesías – MUBI has confirmed the Australian release of Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo’s acclaimed Spanish series. The seven-part drama streams from 3 September 2026.
The release gives Australian viewers a direct path to one of Spain’s most talked-about recent dramas. It brings thriller tension, family trauma and religious fanaticism into MUBI’s local streaming line-up.
The series is a Movistar Plus Original in collaboration with Suma Content. It comes from Ambrossi and Calvo, the Cannes Best Director-winning duo behind La Bola Negra.
La Mesías will stream exclusively on MUBI in Australia. It will also stream on MUBI in the UK, Canada, Turkey, The Netherlands, Germany and France.
What La Mesías Is About
The story follows Enric, whose childhood was shaped by religious fanaticism and a mother with messianic delusions. Years later, the mysterious Catholic pop group Stella Maris becomes a viral sensation.
That sudden fame brings Enric’s memories flooding back. It also forces him and his sister Irene to confront secrets they have tried to leave buried.
The series spans three decades. It blends family drama, thriller elements and touches of magical realism. MUBI describes it as a story about what families pass down, and what it takes to finally put the past down.
Cast And Release
La Mesías stars Lola Dueñas, Macarena García, Carmen Machi and Cecilia Roth. The series was selected for Sundance and San Sebastián. It will launch on MUBI with a two-episode premiere.
