The Sopranos star Vincent Pastore dies aged 80 – The actor was best known for playing mobster Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in HBO’s landmark television drama.
Pastore’s manager, Bob McGowan, confirmed the death to The Associated Press. He said the actor was found at his home on City Island in New York after friends had been unable to contact him for several days.
For Australian viewers, Pastore’s most famous performance remains readily connected to one of television’s defining dramas, with The Sopranos available through HBO Max in Australia.
The role that defined Vincent Pastore
Salvatore Bonpensiero was a longtime friend and associate of Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini. Known throughout the series as “Big Pussy”, the character became central to one of the drama’s earliest major betrayals.
Bonpensiero secretly worked as an FBI informant while trying to maintain his place inside Tony’s crew. That storyline drove much of the tension across the first two seasons and led to one of the show’s most memorable episodes.
Pastore appeared in 30 episodes across the series, including later dream sequences and flashbacks. Although the character’s fate was sealed early, his presence continued to hang over Tony and the wider story.
A career filled with tough guys
Before The Sopranos, Pastore built a long career playing gangsters, neighbourhood figures and tough guys. His film credits included Goodfellas, Awakenings, Carlito’s Way, The Basketball Diaries and Cop Land.
He also appeared opposite several future Sopranos cast members in the 1996 HBO film Gotti. Later television work ranged from crime dramas to comedy and reality appearances, including Celebrity Apprentice.
Pastore continued acting into his later years. His manager told AP he had been trying to reach the actor about a possible new job.
Friends remember a generous colleague
Michael Imperioli, who played Christopher Moltisanti, remembered Pastore as a kind-hearted friend who cared deeply about those close to him. The pair worked and travelled together over many years, including trips to Australia.
Longtime representative Robert Attermann said Pastore treated fans with warmth and respect and was generous with younger actors seeking guidance.
Pastore was born in the Bronx and grew up in New Rochelle. He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War before beginning an acting career that stretched across more than four decades. He is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore.
