Slo Pitch steps up to bat on HBO Max Australia – Slo Pitch, the new comedy series from the studio behind Heated Rivalry, will premiere on HBO Max in Australia on Friday, 25 September.
The 10-episode, half-hour mockumentary follows a queer slo-pitch softball team and their determined coach as they try to turn years of losing into a winning season.
For Australian viewers, the series gives HBO Max another character-driven comedy built around an ensemble and a very specific world. This time, the setting is recreational sport, where the competition is serious even when the team is not always prepared.
About Slo Pitch
Slo Pitch follows Joanne Pico, played by Jess Salgueiro, as she coaches six-time league losers The Public Lass Brovaries.
Joanne is trying to rebuild the team after being dumped by her girlfriend and team co-founder. However, the road back is messy. Across the season, the team deals with petty rivalries, strained friendships, questionable sponsors and disastrous fundraising ideas.
The pressure also becomes personal when Joanne has to face her ex on a rival team. As a result, the season becomes about more than winning games. It is also about whether the team can hold itself together.
Cast
The cast includes Jess Salgueiro, Emily Hampshire, Karen Knox, Gwenlyn Cumyn and Emma Hunter.
The series also stars Chelsea Muirhead, Lane Webber, Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah and Amanda Cordner. Guest appearances include Varun Saranga, Laura De Carteret, Don MacLean Jr., Nadine Bhabha, Carolyn Taylor, Chris Locke and Chris Sandiford.
Japanese softball star Ayami Sato also appears. Sato was the first woman to play in a Canadian men’s professional baseball league.
Creative Team
Slo Pitch was created by J Stevens, Karen Knox and Gwenlyn Cumyn. It is based on the acclaimed short-form series of the same name.
The series was developed for television by Katie Ford and Jane Cooper Ford. It is executive produced by Elliot Page for PageBoy Productions and Emily Hampshire, alongside producers from Shaftesbury.
