Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone adds James, Lily and Charlie to HBO Max cast — Three more members of Harry Potter’s extended family have been cast in HBO’s new series. Jasper Talbot will play James Potter, Hannah Chinn will play Lily Potter and Harry Gilby will play Charlie Weasley.

The announcement came on 27 October, as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone continues towards its Christmas 2026 debut on HBO Max. Australian viewers already have HBO Max, but the casting announcement did not specify a separate Australian premiere date.

Charlie is the addition that most clearly separates the television cast from the films. Ron’s older brother is part of the books, but TVLine notes that he appeared in the films only in a family photograph. His casting gives the series an opportunity to put a familiar book character on screen.

Who plays James and Lily Potter?

Jasper Talbot has been cast as James Potter and Hannah Chinn as Lily Potter, Harry’s parents. In the original films, Adrian Rawlins and Geraldine Somerville played the roles. HBO has named the new performers but has not described how their characters will appear in the first season, so their screen time remains unknown.

Talbot has appeared in Broadchurch, while Chinn appeared in The Conjuring: Last Rites. Gilby, who takes on Charlie Weasley, is known for The Last Kingdom. These credits may help viewers place the new faces, although the roles they will play in the series are the story here.

Where the new cast fits

Dominic McLaughlin leads the eight-episode first season as Harry. Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley. John Lithgow is Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu is Severus Snape, Janet McTeer is Minerva McGonagall and Nick Frost is Rubeus Hagrid.

Francesca Gardiner wrote and executive produced the adaptation. Mark Mylod is also an executive producer and will direct several episodes. The first season follows Harry’s introduction to Hogwarts, beginning with the letter that changes his life.

HBO has already given viewers a second teaser for the series. It offers a look at the new Hogwarts world while the newly announced family roles remain to be seen.
