Five Australian horror films and shows to watch this Halloween — Australian horror can be unnerving, funny or painfully familiar. This Halloween, there are several local films and series that viewers can watch through services available here, rather than chasing recommendations that have no Australian release.
Three of these picks are available on ABC iview, one is on Stan, and one has a Halloween-night screening on NITV. The choices range from a classic outback ordeal to a new comedy about murderous garden gnomes.
Availability was checked against the ABC, Stan and SBS on 29 October. Streaming catalogues and broadcast schedules can change, so confirm a title in the service or your local guide before settling in.
1. The Babadook — ABC iview
If you want dread rather than jump scares, start with The Babadook. Jennifer Kent’s film follows a mother and son whose fears take on a frightening shape after a disturbing children’s book enters their home. Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman anchor a story that works as both supernatural horror and a portrait of exhaustion and grief.
ABC iview has placed the film in its Halloween Howlers collection. It is a strong choice for viewers who want a compact, intense film rather than a series marathon.
2. The Strange Calls — ABC iview
For a gentler kind of fright, The Strange Calls turns odd reports from a small town into a supernatural comedy. It follows a police officer who is assigned the night shift and begins encountering the local mysteries that everyone else seems to accept.
All six episodes appear in ABC iview’s Halloween collection. It is the pick for anyone who wants strange creatures and Australian humour without committing to a grim evening.
3. Wake in Fright — ABC iview
Wake in Fright is the oldest film here and arguably the least comfortable. A schoolteacher’s journey stops in an outback town after a game of two-up goes wrong. What follows is a descent into an unsettling world of drinking, pressure and isolation.
The 1971 film is available on ABC iview. Its horror comes from people and place, making it a different experience from the supernatural titles on this list.
4. Gnomes — Stan
If your Halloween mood runs to horror comedy, the 2026 Stan Original Gnomes offers six short episodes. Senior Sergeant Arnold Kipps faces the collapse of his small-town police station just as an ancient curse unleashes killer garden gnomes.
Stan lists the whole season as available now. Asa Butterfield and Megan Smart star, and the service also has an official trailer. This is the newest Australian production among the five.
5. Wolf Creek — NITV
For a late Halloween screening, NITV has scheduled Wolf Creek for Saturday 31 October at 8:30pm in the Sydney guide. The film strands backpackers in remote Australia, where an offer of help becomes a threat.
This is a scheduled television broadcast. SBS has not confirmed in the source checked here that the film will be available to replay on SBS On Demand, and viewers outside Sydney should confirm their local NITV listing.
