Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway trailer sends the Heffleys to paradise – Greg Heffley and his family swap snow for an island resort, but their tropical Christmas quickly becomes another holiday disaster.
The new animated movie streams on Disney+ in Australia from Friday 4 December. Its sunny setting gives the franchise a fresh visual backdrop while keeping Greg trapped in the family chaos that drives the Wimpy Kid stories.
It also arrives as a summer holiday release for Australian families, even though the story is framed around Christmas. The contrast between a tropical resort and the usual wintry seasonal setting is central to the film’s comic premise.
A Christmas getaway goes wrong
The Heffleys arrive at what should be a relaxing island resort. Instead, their holiday plans unravel as mishaps, family friction and Greg’s own decisions turn paradise into a comic survival exercise.
Greg must deal with the pressure of spending an entire getaway with Frank, Susan, Rodrick and Manny while the resort’s carefully planned activities begin to fall apart. The trailer leans into the mismatch between the idyllic brochure version of the trip and the Heffleys’ chaotic reality.
Jacob Isaac Peterson voices Greg, with Chris Diamantopoulos as Frank, Erica Cerra as Susan, Hunter Dillon as Rodrick and Gracen Newton as Manny. Jude Zarzaur returns as Greg’s best friend, Rowley.
The supporting voice cast includes Fred Armisen as the Director of Fun, Beau Bridges as Captain Stubbard, Jeff Hiller as a first-class flight attendant and Keyla Monterroso Mejia as a receptionist.
Those resort and travel characters broaden the world beyond the immediate family. They also give the holiday story a self-contained group of personalities who can collide with Greg’s plans during the getaway.
Jeff Kinney returns for the new film
Matt Danner directs Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway. Franchise creator Jeff Kinney wrote and produced the movie.
The film continues Disney+’s animated Wimpy Kid collection, giving families another original story built around the characters and visual style of Kinney’s books.
The existing animated films are already collected on the service, so The Getaway can be watched as the latest chapter in the same screen franchise. Viewers can also revisit Greg’s earlier school and family disasters before the new Christmas adventure arrives.
