New this week on Apple TV: Matchbox The Movie, Small Prophets and finales – John Cena’s Matchbox The Movie arrives on Apple TV in Australia on Friday 9 October, alongside a week of new episodes and two season finales. The new comedy Small Prophets has launched with two episodes, while Australian thriller Last Seen and Ted Lasso season four have reached their conclusions.

For Australian viewers choosing what to watch now, the distinction is straightforward: Matchbox The Movie is a complete film, both finales are available to stream, and the other four continuing series are still releasing episodes weekly. Small Prophets and Brothers continue on Wednesdays, while Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars and Dark Matter release on Fridays.

Matchbox The Movie premieres on Apple TV

Inspired by Mattel’s toy-car line, Matchbox The Movie reunites a group of childhood friends when Sean, their long-absent former leader and an undercover CIA agent, returns to their small town. Sean’s arrival drags them into an international pursuit with much higher stakes than their old friendships suggested.

John Cena plays Sean, with Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro among the principal cast. Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Farahani also appear. The film is directed and executive produced by Sam Hargrave, whose credits include Extraction, from a screenplay by David Coggeshall.

The Apple Original Film comes from Skydance Media and Mattel Films. Producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger for Skydance, Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz for Mattel Films, and Jules Daly. Patrick Newall and Elizabeth Bassin are executive producers. The film begins streaming in Australia on Friday 9 October.

Small Prophets begins with two episodes

Small Prophets centres on Michael Sleep, played by Pearce Quigley. Seven years after Clea disappeared, Michael still works in a DIY store, visits his father Brian and hopes she will return. Brian, played by Sir Michael Palin, gives him an old recipe that supposedly creates homunculi: small magical spirits able to predict the future. Michael hopes they can answer the one question that matters to him.

Lauren Patel plays Michael’s young co-worker Kacey, whose friendship with him grows amid their shared dislike of store manager Gordon. Mackenzie Crook plays Gordon, while Sophie Willan and Jon Pointing portray curious neighbours watching the activity around Michael’s garden shed. Paul Kaye is also in the cast.

The first two episodes are now available on Apple TV in Australia. New episodes follow each Wednesday through 4 November, giving viewers a new comedy to follow after the week’s two concluding series.

Last Seen and Ted Lasso reach their finales

The sixth and final episode of Last Seen, titled “The Choice”, is now streaming. In the finale, a confrontation between Ian and Henry leaves Sarah facing a decision. The six-part thriller was set and filmed in Victoria, making it the distinctly Australian entry in this week’s Apple TV line-up.

Patrick Brammall plays Ian Ridley, a former police detective whose daughter Maggie vanished 11 years earlier. Now a police dispatcher, Ian hears a distress call from a teenage girl whom he believes is Maggie. Maxine Peake, Brendan Cowell, Daniel Henshall, Jessica Wren, Zahra Newman and newcomer Chloe Jean Lourdes also star.

Kris Mrksa adapted the series from Ryan David Jahn’s novel The Dispatcher. Christian Schwochow directed and executive produced it. Other executive producers include Jamie Laurenson and Hakan Kousetta of 60Forty Films, Mrksa and Joanna Werner of Werner Film Productions. The finale completes the season, so all six episodes are available to watch together.

Ted Lasso season four also ends this week. Episode ten, “The Departing Lass”, is now on Apple TV. This season brought Ted back to Richmond to coach a second-division women’s football team, with the players and coach learning to take chances in unfamiliar territory.

Jason Sudeikis leads the series, with returning cast members Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt and Jeremy Swift. Season-four additions include Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern and Grant Feely. Jack Burditt joined as an executive producer, while Sudeikis, Goldstein, Hunt and Bill Lawrence remain among the creative team.

Four series continue with new episodes

Brothers reaches episode four, “The Band”, in which Woody and Matthew test their musical talents as Olive’s investigation intensifies. The eight-part comedy stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as fictionalised versions of themselves. A family stay at Matthew’s Austin ranch becomes increasingly chaotic after Matthew’s mother hints the two friends may actually be brothers.

Holland Taylor plays Ma Mac, with Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan and Oona Yaffe also in the ensemble. Episode four is streaming now, and one new instalment follows each Wednesday through 4 November.

Food documentary series Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars continues its second season on Friday 9 October with episode four, “We could make history!”. The episode follows a São Paulo couple pursuing Latin America’s first three-star Michelin title and a Rio chef competing for recognition alongside his son.

Across the eight-part season, the series follows 16 restaurants at critical points in their pursuit of Michelin recognition. Some chefs have given up a star to start again; others are trying to win a place for cuisines and locations that have rarely had the same attention. Jesse Burgess hosts, and Gordon Ramsay and Studio Ramsay Global executive produce. Further episodes arrive each Friday through 6 November.

Meanwhile, Slow Horses season six reaches episode four, “Lost and Found”. Jackson Lamb tries to discover whom Frank is working for, while Sid, River and Coe evade a hit squad. Gary Oldman returns as Lamb, leader of the MI5 misfits at Slough House, in a six-episode season that puts his team on the run amid Diana Taverner’s retaliation and revenge.

The cast includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Rosalind Eleazar, Joanna Scanlan, Samuel West, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke, Jonathan Pryce, Hugo Weaving and newcomer Lenny Rush. Episode four is streaming now; the remaining episodes follow on Wednesdays through 21 October.

Finally, Dark Matter season two premieres episode seven, “The Pyramid”, on Friday 9 October. Charlie meets a stranger, Blair warns Leighton, and Amanda and Ryan confront an unknown danger. The science-fiction drama, based on Blake Crouch’s novel, stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly as Jason and Daniela Dessen.

Season two finds the Dessens trying to live safely in another world, but Jason’s fixation on the Box and Daniela’s growing fear threaten that fragile stability. Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley and Amanda Brugel also star. New episodes continue each Friday through 30 October.
