Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook trailer previews Apple TV culinary journey – Awkwafina takes on a challenge close to home in the first trailer for her eight-part Apple TV docuseries: learning to cook while trying to revive her family’s Cantonese restaurant. The series premieres globally on Friday, 6 November 2026.
For Australian viewers, the Apple TV release offers more than a celebrity food tour. Nora Lum, the performer known as Awkwafina, uses each stop to build the skills she needs for Lum’s, the restaurant her family ran in Flushing, New York. The journey leads to an opening night with her grandmother among the diners.

The official trailer introduces Lum’s mission and the kitchen lessons ahead. She admits, “I can’t cook. Like, at all.” Chefs, restaurateurs and family members help her explore contemporary Asian American cooking and consider what the restaurant’s legacy could become.
A road trip built around Lum’s
First, Lum takes a crash course at the Culinary Institute of America. She then travels to Texas for barbecue with actor and comedian Jimmy O. Yang. Along the way, she learns from chefs Roy Choi and Martin Yan, bringing different approaches to food and hospitality into her own plan.
In Hawai‘i, Lum investigates the tiki culture that influenced her grandmother’s restaurant. Later, she faces the pace of service at a restaurant in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. Those experiences build towards the series’ final test: a high-stakes opening night at Lum’s.
The family connection gives the eight episodes a clear destination. Lum is not simply collecting recipes on the road; she is preparing to reopen a place that belongs to her family’s history. Her grandmother’s presence at the final dinner raises the stakes beyond a conventional cooking challenge.
