Olympic Games Paris 2024 on Stan - Day 3 Preview

Olympics Daily hosted by Tara Rushton – Now Streaming

Paris Preview hosted by Adam Peacock – Now Streaming

Experts: Grant Hackett, Casey Dellacqua, Morgan Turinui, Michael Hooper, Mark Bosnich, Shane Heal and Nova Peris

Highlights & expert opinions from today’s shows:

Grant Hackett looks ahead to the Women’s 200m Freestyle Final where our Aussie stars Ariarne Titmus and Mollie O’Callaghan will go head-to-head :

“I am going to say Mollie (will take it out). Ariarne took the World Record off her a few weeks ago at Olympic Trials. Her focus is on the 200 and getting the World Record back. It’s going to be very very close. I think Mollie is going to get her hand on the wall first this time.”

“They are different athletes. Mollie goes down to the 100 and Ariarne goes up to the 4 and 800m; they would cross over in their training 40% of the time so there would be a healthy respect there.”

Alicia Lucas on the formidable display the Australian Women’s Rugby Sevens side put on against South Africa and Great Britain to book a spot in the Quarter Finals.

“They are off to an absolute flyer. It was a history breaking day out at Stade de France – the biggest ever crowd for a female Rugby Sevens match. It was electric.”

“The girls came out in flying fashion. The performance they put on was absolutely golden. Dominating their first match against South Africa and then following that back up against Great Britain which was a really tight, contested game, it was special to watch.”

“I was waiting for her [Maddison Levi] to shine and shine she did. Seven tries, four in one game. I think it was four in ten minutes total that she got. Incredible effort.”

Nova Peris reviews the Men’s and Women’s Hockey Teams’ second pool matches against Great Britain and Ireland and reflects on their opening matches:

“In the first game, they (Kookaburras) were full of intensity, they just kept going and going. They were relentless in the way they attacked. Both Argentinian goal keepers were just incredible in making an enormous amount of saves. Australia has beaten Ireland twice this year and the last time Australia beat them 4-1 in the Pro League so it will be a good game.”

“It is not going to be an easy game for the Hockeyroos. Great Britain have come off a 2-1 loss against Spain so GB will be wanting to redeem themselves for that. Even though the Hockeyroos have played GB and beaten them this year it is going to be a hard one for them.”

“They [the Kookaburras] rarely play South Africa, last time was at the 2012 Olympics, so I think their (South Africa) goal in the third quarter surprised them. It was a great win. Australia can take a lot from it – looking at the stats, Australia had 20 circle penetrations but are not converting them, three short corners and scored one from there. I think Australia needs to take a lot from that game and reflect on it… we’re not maximising our opportunities and take that into the next game.”

Casey Dellacqua talks all things tennis including the Round 2 match up between super stars Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal:

“They have played each other 60 times. The last time was two years ago. He (Rafa) was pretty good in his first round match. Rafa’s game is not where it was. But you can’t go past that he is the ultimate player on clay courts even with his injury issues. It’s going to be a big game. Novak is going to have to lift. He really, in my opinion, is going in as favourite. Purely from the time on court he has had in the last two years compared to Rafa.”

London 2012 Bronze Medallist Holly Young on how the Australian Women’s Water Polo Team’s chances are looking following their win over China:

“For the girls essentially, you have to win every single game and it means in the crossover if you finish third or fourth you’re playing USA or Spain in the Quarter-Final and you have to have that in mind as motivation while playing game by game. Their game against China, I have definitely seen them play a lot better but that comes down to so many things. It’s your first game in an Olympics, you’ve got so many debutants, they’re nervous and you know what – it’s whoever gets the most goals wins and that’s what they did. I’m really, really excited.”

“Up next is Netherlands – every team is the same, you have to win, there is that pressure. I would say the pressure is on the Netherlands. They’re expected to win and being the underdogs can be a massive favour. They just have to go out there and fight and play the Stingers way. I really believe they can come away with a medal.”

Mark Bosnich on the Matildas dramatic come from behind win in a high-scoring match against Zambia.

“I am never surprised to be surprised. This one this morning was right up there with one of the most amazing games of football I have ever seen. 5–2 down in the second half and the manager makes three changes and they all had a massive effect especially Michelle [Heyman] who got the winner.”

“They were staring down the abyss. You’re having a nightmare in front of the whole world. You have two choices – you cower or you fight and boy did they fight back. We’re fighting and we’re still in it. Were they good? No. Were they bad? No. Were they entertaining? Yes, they were. Did they win? Yes, they did.”

Shane Heal looks ahead to the Opals first game against Nigeria tonight in primetime:

“They have been a powerhouse in women’s basketball for such a long time, so this dry patch is going to make them extremely motivated and it’s really medal or bust for the Opals. They’ve selected an experienced team; there are seven players between 30 and 43 years of age so that’s the advantage they’ve got. This is a tournament they expect to get back on the podium and I think they will.”

Shane Heal shares his insights on the USA Men’s Basketball Team’s statement win (110-84) over Serbia.

“I think some people have been questioning if the USA are as good as they have been in the past. They made a major statement to the rest of the world with this win. And Kevin Durant! 21 points if you don’t mind – Five-from-five at the three line. You can see the passion that KD has got. Let’s not forget about LeBron – 21 points, 9 assists, 11 rebounds. When the bright lights are on, they come to play and their defence was key – they held Serbia to nine from 37.”
