Olympics Daily hosted by Tara Rushton – Now Streaming

Paris Preview hosted by Adam Peacock – Now Streaming

Experts: Shane Heal, Elise Kellond-Knight, Stuart O’Grady, Jamie Dwyer & Geoff Ogilvy

Highlights & expert opinions from today’s shows:

Olympian and former Sharks player, Billy Miller on the Australian Stingers clutching victory over the USA in the Women’s Water Polo Semi-Finals – the first time the Aussie women have beaten USA in an Olympic competition since Sydney 2000 and the first time they will play for Gold since London 2012.

(Clip here)

“That was one of the best games I have seen in my entire life. We went from being behind to being in front and then behind to a penalty shoot-out. Who would have thought? It came down to the last shot in the penalty shoot-out. It was absolutely amazing. [Australia] Switched goalkeepers twice and Gabi Palm came up with the ultimate save, probably the best save of her career.”

“I don’t think they need any more confidence, I think their confidence is riding high. Next game against the Spanish will be a tight game. Most likely will go to penalty shoot-out again so can they do it for a fourth time.”

John Steffensen on the boil-over in the Men’s 200m with American Noah Lyles finishing third with Botswana athlete Letsile Tebogo winning Gold and American Kenneth Bednarek claiming Silver. The event became even more dramatic with Lyles being issued a yellow card for ‘behaviour’ prior to the start.

“That was an interesting one. After [he] won the 100, his pet event, he should have won the 200m. There were rumblings, and he’s come out and confirmed that he had Covid. I watched him warm up and he didn’t look like the Noah we saw in the 100. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t do the 4 x 100. I also heard some rumblings that he might be a little bit injured. And in the race he didn’t look comfortable at all. Hats off to Tebogo, he ran absolutely fantastic in the 200m. How great for Botswana, a Gold Medal in the 200.”

“I was saying with the 100m, his entry and energy worked for him, so I don’t think I’m in any position to judge what the reigning 100m champion does. As for the yellow card, you guys know how much I love rules!”

John Steffensen on Jessica Hull’s run in the 1500m Semi-Final and her chances against the favourite, Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon in the Final.

“I am so proud of Jess. She looked great in the warm up, in the race and in warm down. She’s so confident. This is a moment for Australians to get behind an Australian who is running a hardcore blue ribbon event. It is really, really tough. My history is terrible but I don’t believe we have had a Women’s 1500m Gold Medal and we have a young Jess Hull who has the opportunity to do that. We saw World Record Holder Faith Kipyegon vulnerable in the 5k race. Can this happen again? She looked great tonight but it all comes down to tactics and if Faith doesn’t run her own race, Jess could potentially pip her and win.”

John Steffensen on Peyton Craig heading into the Men’s 800m Semi-Final, and reflecting on the heartbreak for the Aussie men in the 4 x 100m Relay, missing the Final despite being faster than three of the teams that led the other Semi-Final.

“I love this young kid [Peyton]. I love his attitude, his structures, I love how he ran in the Heat. He looked so, so good out there. Don’t be surprised if he gives some headaches in his Semi-Final tomorrow. He has a tough event, he has a lot to learn but I’m just saying, look out for your boy because he’s giving some headaches tomorrow.”

“[The Aussie men in the 4 x 100] Was a great run and they deserved to the be in the Final. That was a hard one for me to swallow today. They’re a young crop of athletes and they deserve to be in that Final. Are you happy with the Australian Record but you don’t make the Final or would you want to make the Final but not do the Record? It’s a hard one but I am sure they want to be out there under the bright lights.”

Former Great Britain Olympic sprinter and now coach of American hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Malachi Davis on the Women’s 400m Hurdles Final and Sydney’s World Record Gold Medal run.

“Last year we had injuries and time out, this is our time now. We are all pleased and excited, party through the night – but not too much because we have the 4 x 400 on Saturday. Everyone works really hard at this stage of their career, we were just happy for her to be healthy first and foremost and moving in the right direction.”

Stuart O’Grady on Matthew Richardson’s chances in the Men’s Sprint ahead of his Semi-Final showdown with Dutch Tokyo Silver medallist Jeffrey Hoogland.

“I think Matty’s full of confidence, they’ve got that Bronze in the Team Sprint… [Dutch World Record holder] Harrie Lavreysen is the big favourite – everybody knows that – but they’re only 0.01s apart in the qualification so there’s a great chance for Matty to not only medal but get into that Gold Medal Final.”

Former Boomer and Olympian Shane Heal looks at the Men’s Basketball Semi-Finals with USA surviving a scare against Serbia and France overcoming Germany in front of a passionate home crowd.

“I think everyone wanted to see America go down. They have the superstars and the notoriety, but the underdogs Serbia just couldn’t get it done in the last quarter. They were up by 11 points with five minutes to go and it was a six point play. Durant hit a three, the screener was fouled, they got the ball back, came in – bang, hit a three and it goes from 11 to five and then the USA rode with momentum. It was the chance of a lifetime against a country like America. Everyone expected [USA] to win the game convincingly. The rest of the world is catching up.”

“France, we’ve spoken about them underachieving. They lost to Germany in the earlier rounds. They looked like they were imploding but they have managed to put it together on the biggest stage, in front of a massive crowd in front of French fans.”

Shane Heal on the challenge the Opals face in their Semi-Final against powerhouse USA.

“This is going to be a tough ask – these American women have won 58 straight games. I don’t think they’ve lost a game since 1992 at the Olympics. We’re talking about a stranglehold and a dominance on the world game. They’re deep, they’re athletic, they’ve got size – it’s going to be a huge challenge but Australia just has to make it ugly. They’ve just got to drag them back down to our level; get physical, upset them, try and play a slow tempo game. Then, who knows!”
