Experts: Shane Heal, Craig Foster, Stuart O’Grady, Elise Kellond-Knight, Michael Zerafa with Nat Cook and Billy Miller in Paris.

Highlights & expert opinions from today’s shows:

2012 London Olympian Billy Miller on the Sharks hopes of reaching the top four of the Men’s Water Polo for the first time ever at an Olympics when they come up against USA in the Quarter-Finals tomorrow morning.

“The USA is going to be a very strong opponent coming off a good win in their last game against Croatia which was no easy feat and that win has allowed them to come up against Australia and finish third instead of fourth. That put them on a high at the end compared to us, probably slipping on the mental side of things and losing to Japan but it will be a tough match. 95% of the USA players all play overseas in Europe compared to about 50% of the Aussies so they’re playing in the best competitions in the world and they are one of the fittest teams, strongest teams going around. It will be a feisty and physical game.”

“The other side of the draw is probably the side that [they] don’t want, being four strong European countries – Spain, Hungary, Croatia and Italy. They’re all looking on top of their game, especially Spain and Hungary. I think Australia are perfectly placed to win where they are. They are one win away from medal contention.”

Gold Medallist and six-time Olympian Stuart O’Grady on Australia’s men achieving an historic Bronze in the Team Sprint ending 24 years of frustration.

“It’s a drought breaker. First time in 24 years [our men have won a medal in the Men’s Team event]. Matty Glaetzer said that Bronze felt like Gold, he’s been fourth on so many occasions and this is his fourth Olympics. The Aussies did an absolutely mind-boggling thing in this Final, they swapped their order around, they didn’t event train this. Normally Matty Glaetzer is the third wheel, the last man, the anchor. They’ve gone you know what, if we’re going to beat the French for the first time in a long time, we need to do something drastic and drastic they did. Matty Glaetzer taking off first is just unheard of. It was a huge change and a high-risk manoeuvre, but the Aussies delivered – they believed in themselves, they knew they had the speed, that something had to change. It was down to the wire – 0.1 of a second. It could have gone either way, but the Aussies really wanted this more and that’s hard to believe when you’re racing the French on French soil at the Olympics, but they came through with the goods.”

Olympic Beach Volleyball Gold Medallist Nat Cook on Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy producing a gutsy fightback to secure their spot in the Women’s Beach Volleyball Semi-Finals.

(Clip here)

“That was nail-biting. They played so well the match before we were looking for the same aces and same blocking and it didn’t start like that, so we were on the edge of our seats.”

“Unfortunately, they haven’t had a lot of practice this year, they’ve had a tough lead in so to be where they are, we are super excited. Now no Volleyball technique is going to help them, it’s all about learning to win in Olympic Semi-Finals, which they’ve done before, and then they need to learn to win in the Final, we haven’t seen that yet. Have they got what it takes, absolutely. Mariafe there behind, Taliqua gathers up everything, is really great on transitions. Taliqua’s serve is amazing, her block is great. Her ‘on-two’ – where she smashes the ball really hard is good and together, we’re looking for more medals from them.”

Commonwealth Games 200m Gold Medallist and 2 x Olympian Nova Peris on the Women’s 200m Final and how favourite Gabby Thomas dominated throughout.

“She owned that race from start to finish. She had the absolute perfect lane draw and she had the 100m Olympic Champion on the outside of her to really set the pace. I am so happy for her, she is such a beautiful person. She has the complete set now – Bronze in Tokyo, Silver last year in Budapest and now the 200m Olympic Champion.”

Still recovering from the Boomers heart-breaking loss to Serbia, four-time Olympian Shane Heal looks ahead to the Opals who also come up against the European powerhouse in their Quarter-Final at 7:00pm AEST.

“As a player and a coach, I’ve always said you’re allowed to sook it up for 24 hours, but I feel like I’m still in that sooking it up stage. I feel like it’s too early to move on, but we’ve got the Opals coming up. The good thing for the Opals is Serbia in the women aren’t nearly as good as they are in the men, so I think we’re a great chance. Things didn’t start off too well for the Opals campaign, it was the first time an Australian team has lost to an African nation, but gee they’ve been able to turn it around pretty quickly and they really turned it on in the last game against the host nation. They were exceptional. It only takes one game like that to set up the rest of the tournament.”

Nova Peris on the athletics and Aussies Nina Kennedy (Pole Vault) and Matt Denny (Discus Throw) eyeing the podium in two of tomorrow morning’s Finals.

“Nina Kennedy won Gold last year at the World Championships where she stood equally on the dais with Katie Moon from USA. She’s coming in with great form this year, we saw her go over 4.55m in the qualifying heats and cleared by a country mile. She oozes confidence, but it’s contained confidence and that is what you need going into the Olympic Final. Especially as while she is the World Champion, this is the one she is after and she has said she won’t share it again if she gets the chance.”

“Matt Denny finished fourth in the Tokyo, fourth at the World Champs last year and he comes into the Olympics number three and he broke the Australian Record this year. He threw the second furthest in the Qualifying Heats, he’s in great form and he absolutely looks set to get on the podium. It is going to be hard for him to get Gold but definitely Silver and Bronze is there for the taking. To even consider Gold you have to find five metres and that would be a personal best. Anything can happen at the Olympic Games as we’ve seen previously. I hope Matt can get up there.”

2006 US Open Champion Geoff Ogilvy on the impact of golf at the Olympics and what lies ahead for the women’s competition.

“Everyone was blown away [by the men’s competition]. It took a bit to get going at Rio and Tokyo. This time they had massive crowds, the best golfer in the world won, the who’s who’s in golf were there, the cream rose to the top and they all had a chance to win. This Olympics will now see kids growing up wanting to win a Gold Medal in golf. The sport has been fractured with arguments about money – it’s all about money and more money. This was purely for the competition representing your country and you could see how much it means to him [Scheffler], it was so great to see.”

“They move the tees about 10% for the women. They will be hitting similar distances into the greens but the women are very accurate, they are incredibly straight hitters so they will hit more fairways which is very important around here, probably more greens but they hit with slightly different clubs and their ball clubs are different so it will be interesting to see if they attack the course as much as the men or maybe even more. They will have done some research, watched the men play, seen how to play the course and they’ll have more of an idea than the men did going in.”

Champion Australian Boxer and former Olympian Michael Zerafa on Aussie Boxers Caitlin Parker (75kg Division) and 22-year-old Charlie Senior (Men’s 57kg Division) vying for the Gold in their Medal bouts later this week.

“She’s [Caitlin] always training super hard so I couldn’t imagine what that would have felt like to win and secure a medal at the Olympics. I think she could go all the way and win the Gold. She has great ability, a hard worker in the gym. I tell everyone that you train hard to fight easy, and I think she has that same mentality. Going into this fight the Gold is definitely reachable and winnable for her.”

“I am a big fan of Charlie. He’s super explosive the way he boxes. In the amateurs I think he’s more suitable for this than the pros – pros want to stand there and fight, he has good boxing on queue, he wants to hit and not be hit which is the key of the amateur game. I think he will win the Gold. He has all the ability in the world and he’s basically come from nowhere. He’s come out and made a huge statement and he wants Gold, and I think he’s a big chance to win it.”
