David Riccio says Adam Reynolds’ retirement was not his choice on Channel 7 – David Riccio has told The Agenda Setters: Rugby League that Adam Reynolds wanted to play on, but Brisbane Broncos staff made the final call on his retirement.
Speaking on the Channel 7 rugby league program, Riccio said a calf issue ended Reynolds’ run. He said Reynolds felt he could have played at least one more game.
The comments give Channel 7’s rugby league panel another major talking point around Brisbane’s season and Reynolds’ legacy. Reynolds arrived at the Broncos as the experienced organiser Brisbane needed. His move became one of the defining recruitment calls of the modern NRL era.
Riccio said the decision would take time for Reynolds to digest. In Riccio’s view, that is because Reynolds did not get to make the final decision himself.
Reynolds finishes with 323 first-grade games across 15 seasons. He also leaves the game with two premierships and more than 2,500 points.
Riccio described it as a remarkable career. He also pushed back on debate that Reynolds had gone one season too long.
Riccio said Reynolds brought Brisbane exactly what the club wanted when it signed him: a premiership.
