FIFA World Cup 2026 on SBS Reaches More Than 16 Million Australians – The FIFA World Cup 2026 on SBS has reached more than 16 million Australians across the first three weeks of the tournament.
SBS has confirmed a cumulative Total TV reach of 16.2 million. That means more than 58 per cent of Australia’s population has watched some of the tournament so far.
The figures have been driven by huge audiences for the Socceroos. In addition, feature matches involving international teams have continued to perform strongly.
Australia’s Round of 32 match against Egypt delivered a major result in the pre-dawn hours. Almost four million fans rose early, or stayed up late, to watch the knockout clash.
The live coverage of Australia v Egypt reached 3.868 million viewers. It also recorded a Total TV average audience of 2.201 million.
SBS On Demand played a major role in the result. The live match drew a 46.4 per cent BVOD contribution, showing strong digital viewing across the tournament.
Socceroos drive record World Cup audiences
The Socceroos’ final Group match against Paraguay remains the biggest audience so far. That match reached 4.844 million viewers and became the most-watched World Cup match in SBS history.
Australia’s opening match against Türkiye also delivered a huge audience. It reached 4.75 million viewers on 14 June.
Meanwhile, Australia v Egypt now sits among the strongest matches of the tournament. USA v Australia also performed strongly, with a live reach of 3.456 million.
Even after Australia’s departure, viewers have stayed with the FIFA World Cup 2026 on SBS. England’s 3-2 win over host nation Mexico reached 2.882 million viewers on Monday.
That made Mexico v England the biggest match not involving Australia so far. It was also one of eight matches to reach more than two million viewers.
SBS celebrates national football passion
SBS Director of Sport Ken Shipp said the tournament continues to bring Australians together through football.
“SBS has been proud to share that experience with Australians for the past 40 years. The knockout rounds have already produced some remarkable football, and with the quarter-finals about to begin, the tournament is building towards a thrilling finish.”
The broadcast has also resonated with younger viewers. SBS says the World Cup ranked number one in the VOZ daily ratings for 23 of the past 25 days in the 16 to 39 age group.
In addition, SBS Sport’s social media platforms have delivered major engagement. Across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube, SBS Sport has recorded more than 979 million video views.
