Michael Sonny Walters joins Seven’s WA commentary team for 2026 – WA voices calling local matches live from the ground.
Seven Perth is proud to confirm the return of its dedicated West Australian AFL commentary team in 2026, with its star power bolstered by the addition of former Fremantle Dockers star, Michael “Sonny” Walters.
Building on a successful 2025 season, Seven Perth will once again deliver comprehensive local coverage across key WA matchups throughout the 2026 AFL Premiership Season, with the State’s leading footy experts calling the matches live from the ground.
Leading the coverage is 7NEWS Perth Sports Presenter Ryan Daniels alongside respected AFL commentator Mark Readings with sports broadcaster Dani Shuey boundary side, forming a team that brings deep local knowledge and connection to WA footy fans.
In 2026, Walters joins an impressive roster of past and present greats including Ben Cousins, Mark LeCras, Daisy Pearce and Shaun McManus, combining elite on-field experience with a genuine understanding of the WA football landscape.
Throughout the season, viewers can expect tailored pre-game and post-game coverage across select matches, delivering expert analysis, behind-the-scenes stories and a distinctly local lens on the action.
Seven West Media WA CEO, Maryna Fewster, said:
“After an incredibly positive response from fans in our first year, we’re thrilled to bring back our dedicated WA commentary team in 2026.
“West Australian footy fans are extremely passionate about their teams, and they want to hear from commentators who truly understand the clubs, the players and the history of football in this state.
“The addition of Sonny Walters further strengthens what is already an outstanding lineup of passionate, knowledgeable WA football voices.”
Having retired from the game at the end of the 2025 season, Walters believes he brings a strong understanding of current playing styles and structures to the commentary team.
“Having played alongside many of the current players, I know them well and have a good feel for how the game is played today,”
– he said.
“I’m really looking forward to bringing that insight to the broadcast and hopefully adding plenty of energy, excitement and positivity for the fans watching at home.”
