Mel joins Aaron after the first episode of Channel 7’s new-look The House of Wellness. What began as a weekend-afternoon program has grown over the years into an established prime-time fixture at 9.30pm. Its health stories remain practical, warm and easy to understand.
Meanwhile, the new team brings Mel together with Shane Crawford, Dr Michela Sorensen and Sam Taunton. The first show mixed health advice, celebrity interviews, comedy, music and Shane’s goggle world-record challenge.
What is The House of Wellness?
The House of Wellness makes health and wellbeing feel conversational. The team shares expert advice without turning it into a lecture. Instead, it is designed to feel more like a lounge-room chat.
Episode one
The premiere included Shane Crawford’s goggle challenge and an interview with Bernard Curry. Meanwhile, Sam Splainer brought a comic angle to laser surgery. Hawthorn great Dipper also joined the conversation.
In addition, the episode explored asthma in a practical and relatable way. Tim Rogers and You Am I then delivered an interview and live music. That mix of education and entertainment is central to the format.
Episode two
Jimmy Rees joins Mel and Shane to discuss parenting, his Edinburgh Fringe debut and becoming a Red Cross Lifeblood advocate. He later returns for an exclusive stand-up performance.
Meanwhile, Dr Michela examines tiredness and insomnia. AFL great Gavin Wanganeen talks about life after football and his work with the Jodi Lee Bowel Cancer Foundation. Sam also gives comedian Dave Thornton a massage with increasingly awkward interview questions.
In addition, Ambulance Victoria shares heart-health advice before the AFL Grand Final. Meanwhile, Shane steps into the ring with world boxing champion Andrew Moloney for his latest Crash Test Crawf challenge.
Mel Doyle’s television career
For many Australians, Mel’s television story starts with Sunrise. Alongside David Koch, she helped make the program part of the national morning routine. She brought warmth, humour and sharp journalistic instincts to live television.
Later, Mel moved into long-form current affairs on Sunday Night. By contrast, those interviews required more time, care and trust. She then hosted the revived This Is Your Life, bringing warmth to celebrations of major Australian figures.
In this conversation, Mel discusses what changes when an interview needs trust rather than a quick answer. She also reflects on the stories that stay with you after the cameras stop.
Watch Mel on Sunrise and This Is Your Life
These official Sunrise clips show two important moments in Mel’s Channel 7 story. One marks her farewell from breakfast television. The other sees her return to discuss hosting the revived This Is Your Life.
What’s in the podcast?
First, Aaron and Mel begin with the new House of Wellness. They discuss the chemistry of the new team and its blend of celebrity, music, humour and useful health information.
Mel also previews episode two, which features Jimmy Rees, Gavin Wanganeen, Dave Thornton and Andrew Moloney. Aaron then asks whether The House of Wellness could grow into a more live, tonight-show-style format.
The conversation explores Dr Michela’s personal health story, Sam Taunton’s role in making health information approachable and the place of live music in the format. Mel also discusses her on-screen partnership with Shane Crawford.
Finally, Aaron and Mel look at the craft of interviewing: building trust with nervous guests, listening well and earning an answer. They revisit Sunday Night, ask whether This Is Your Life could return after its successful revival and discuss what wellbeing looks like for Mel away from the cameras.
