Screen Australia Releases Private Investment Toolkit to Strengthen Screen Financing Pathways – Screen Australia has released a new Private Investment Toolkit, designed to help producers unlock private investment opportunities for screen projects.

The free interactive digital platform has been built by and for the sector. It aims to support a broader shift towards a more sustainable and market-led Australian screen industry.

Commissioned by Screen Australia, the Toolkit was developed in consultation with a taskforce of experts across finance, tax, investment, philanthropy, legal, education and production.

It delivers practical and adaptable resources to help producers and potential investors work together with greater confidence, transparency and deal readiness.

Supporting Producers and Investors

The Private Investment Toolkit recognises that investors can have different motivations.

Some may be seeking commercial return. Others may be driven by social and cultural impact, philanthropic outcomes or a mix of these goals.

As a result, the Toolkit provides tailored approaches and investment structures to help align screen projects with different investment intentions.

Screen Australia Chief Operating Officer Grainne Brunsdon said the Toolkit would help unlock the investment potential of the Australian screen sector.

“The Private Investment Toolkit unlocks the true investment potential of our screen industry. By helping investors understand the opportunities and giving producers the tools to present projects and manage relationships with clarity, confidence and commercial rigour, it opens the door to more constructive dialogue around screen projects, setting the stage for more confident and successful partnerships.”

Brunsdon said the Toolkit also highlights the broader value of investing in screen stories.

“Importantly, it also shows investors exactly where, how and why they should engage, highlighting that the screen sector can deliver influence, ownership and cultural impact as well as returns — a combination that many traditional investments simply can’t deliver.”

Bridging the Knowledge Gap

Producer, investor and taskforce member Deanne Weir described the Toolkit as a significant resource for both producers and investors.

“Screen Australia’s Private Investment Toolkit is an absolute gift to both producers and investors, it will help bridge the significant knowledge gaps that currently exist between those with capital and those who need it.”

Weir said screen stories should again be seen as a meaningful investment opportunity.

“Screen stories have fallen off the radar as an investment opportunity, but we can offer a fun and fulfilling experience to funders who believe that storytelling can both entertain and also help all of us better understand the world we live in. I hope the Toolkit will make it easier to attract and retain the new funding partners critical to the future of the Australian screen industry.”

What the Toolkit Offers Producers

For screen practitioners, the Toolkit provides resources to help prepare projects with a stronger market-informed mindset.

It is designed to complement public funding with private capital. It also aims to make screen investment more attractive through transparent, consistent and market-ready finance approaches.

The Toolkit also guides producers on how to pitch and communicate projects to private investors.

That includes setting out value, risk, timelines and expectations in clear language.

What the Toolkit Offers Investors

For potential investors, the Toolkit offers resources to help them better understand the screen sector.

It also helps investors navigate the investment process and make informed decisions that align with their goals.

The Toolkit supports different investment approaches, including commercial return, social and cultural impact and philanthropic motivations.

It also identifies different ways to invest in screen projects, with varying risk and return profiles.

Part of Screen Australia’s Enrich Pillar

The Private Investment Toolkit was launched under the Enrich Pillar of Screen Australia’s Corporate Plan.
