Blue Ant acquires international rights to The Trial of Alec Baldwin – Blue Ant Media has acquired US and international licensing rights for The Trial of Alec Baldwin. Rory Kennedy directed the feature documentary, which examines the aftermath of the fatal 2021 shooting on the set of Rust.
Blue Ant Rights & Streaming will introduce the title to buyers at MIPCOM in October. The film launched at Cannes. In the United States, Abramorama will begin a select theatrical release on 1 October.
The documentary follows Alec Baldwin through the personal and legal fallout after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died during a Rust rehearsal. It examines how the workplace tragedy became an intensely scrutinised criminal case. It also considers the role of media coverage, celebrity and public perception.
A new perspective on a global story
Kennedy’s work includes Ethel, Last Days in Vietnam and Freefall. She directed the project with writer-producer Mark Bailey. The pair first approached Baldwin in March 2023. They began filming later that spring.
The film includes behind-the-scenes material that the public has not previously seen. It places Baldwin’s experience alongside the wider legal and cultural conversation around the case.
Blue Ant Rights & Streaming Senior Vice-President of Acquisitions Barnaby Shingleton said the documentary offers a rare viewpoint on a story known around the world. Kennedy said the filmmakers wanted to explore the case beyond the headlines.
The Rust case brought questions about film-set safety, criminal proceedings and media attention into one international story. Therefore, the documentary gives MIPCOM buyers an access-led factual title with a strong global profile.
Valentina Daley handled the acquisition for Blue Ant. The company will manage US and international licensing rights as it takes the film to market.
