Tonight | The Naked World on SBS 2: Iceland’s outdoor bathing traditions – The Iceland episode of The Naked World looks at outdoor bathing in icy waters and the country’s connection between nature and nudity. The new instalment airs Friday 30 October at 9:25pm on SBS 2 and streams free on SBS On Demand.

The ten-part documentary travels between cultures to ask why bodies can be controversial in one setting and treated more openly in another. Iceland gives the series a landscape where outdoor bathing is both a social experience and a practical one.

Episode eight visits Iceland

In the eighth episode, inhabitants bathe nude in icy lakes. The programme considers how that practice sits alongside the island’s natural surroundings rather than treating it only as a provocation.

The series’ wider question is why different societies draw different lines around nudity. By visiting people and places directly, it puts those attitudes in their local context.
